Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Donald Ray Montgomery
Command Sergeant Major Donald Ray Montgomery, (59) loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, passed away on January 30, 2021 in Houston, TX.
Command Sergeant Major Donald Ray Montgomery was born on May 12, 1962 to Horace Montgomery, Sr and Dora Montgomery-Williams in Houston, Texas. He attended high school at Jesse Jones high school in Houston and developed a keen interest in sports, especially football and track. Following graduation in 1980 from Jones High School he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he worked in Logistics eventually becoming a highly regarded serviceman and retiring in 2019 as a Command Sergeant Major after nearly 35 years of service. He returned from the war having been awarded the Army Silver Star Medal. He recently worked as a Safety Coach/Engineer for Union Pacific Railroad for the last 9 years.
Being a person always interested in self-improvement and gaining knowledge, CSM Montgomery achieved his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Excelsior College as well as he earned a Certificate in Homeland Security from Excelsior College.
CSM Montgomery is preceded in death by his father Horace Montgomery, Sr., his step-father Mr. Vernon "Gabe" Williams and his brother Tony Montgomery. CSM Montgomery leaves to cherish his memories, his mother Dora Williams, his wife, Mathilda Montgomery, his children Christina Montgomery and Chelsea Montgomery both of Houston, Texas and his son Donald Merritt of Hopkinsville, KY, his sisters – Donna Kay (Terry) Bailey, Rementri (Bobby) Williams, Cynthia Arceneaux, Patricia Montgomery and Wanda Montgomery, and special sister Marilyn Epps all of Houston, Texas, his brothers, Gregory Montgomery and Ronald Montgomery of Houston, Texas and Horace Montgomery, Jr of St. Louis, Mo. His grandchildren, Jenasys and Yasmine Merritt, Travis and Taylor Montgomery and Taedyn Green, Jonee’ and Ja’Nyah Williams of Houston, Texas, Quentin Merritt of North Little Rock, Arkansas, Donari, Donalye, Jamarion, Zy, Iyah and Kylie Merritt of Hopkinsville, KY. Also left to cherish his memories are his Aunts, his special Uncle Mel Brown of Houston, Texas and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
CSM Montgomery served several combat tours, including tours in Honduras, Iraq and Afghanistan where he worked on nation building and supporting democratic institutions around the globe. For his honorable and faithful service in the U.S. Army, CSM Montgomery was awarded numerous service medals and citations including the Bronze Star. His leadership and service were not limited to his military endeavors. He was a loving and loyal friend, and colleague. He was dedicated to his family and his children. He embraced life and work with passion, dedication, and pride. He always made time for others. Many times, he put those in need before himself, whether it was helping feed neighbors during Hurricane Harvey or helping out at the female veteran charitable organization of his wife or American Legion Post 316. He epitomized a life of service - to his country, his state, his neighbors, and the friends and colleagues he called family. A selfless soul Don was accomplished, yet humble. He gave more than he ever took and he will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
