Dr. Norton was both a teacher and a neighbor of mine from 1959 to 1961. He was a dedicated conductor of the City College Marching Band and the Orchestra. He often spoke to me about his childhood home of Ludington, MI and told these stories in a interesting and unforgettable manner.

I am sure this is the Prof. Donald B. Norton who taught music at Baltimore City College ( actually a high school ) in Baltimore during the 1950's. I was a student of his that he took a special interest in. I admired him greatly. He asked me to be his drum major of the school's marching band. At that time under his leadership we had the finest marching band in the city. But I would have to give up football. I decided to stay with football, a decision I regretted many times. I have thought...

Don was a mentor of mine at International
Violin Co. where I worked for 6-7 years as a clerk and later manager. He was so generous with his knowledge and had many interesting stories. He enjoyed music as musch as any person I have ever met and taught me to appreciate the viola. I used to pour thru his identification books and learned a ton about violins and he intgroduced me to Dario D'Attili and many numourous great men and women of the violin world. I just googled his name and saw this...

Don was a special friend to my father, don Roth . He thought of my father as a father figure and we always enjoyed his visits. My father was in the Grand Rapids symphony and was a violin expert so they had many wonderful conversations. When I was ten yrs old he took my two longer brothers and I to the circus . I last saw him after my father died. He stopped by to se me in Petoskey and wanted to know if my dad had suffered and was relieved to know he hadn't died in pain. A special man.

Don would visit my shop every summer to have his collection of violin and viola bows rehaired and repaired. Sometimes we would play duets together. He was a fine gentleman; I will miss his yearly visits.

GSC concert band. Vineland, NJ HS, spring '63
Dr. Norton was conductor of the Concert Band at Glassboro State College in NJ. When I enrolled at Glassboro in '62 this band was a very outstanding group. In my junior and senior years Dr. Norton gave me ample time to conduct this band in concert along with leading all warm-ups for each rehearsal. I will always remember those years of playing bass trombone and having the opportunity to conduct a very fine performing group, with a great deal of fondness. Thank you Dr. Norton, you will always...
