O'Brien Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services - South Hadley Obituary

Donald Quinn, 79, entered eternal life on Saturday May 11, 2024. He was born in Springfield, the son of James and Alice (Smith) Quinn and was educated in the Springfield schools (Holy Name and Cathedral). He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the US Army and was stationed at Ft. Monroe, VA, serving as a General’s aide. College education was at North Adams State in the 60’s. Don loved all sports, mostly golf, college basketball and card playing. He was a loyal fan of the Bruins, Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots. He was an active member of the Springfield Country Club where he enjoyed playing many rounds of golf followed by a good card game. Don played many rounds of golf at SCC and Longmeadow Country Club with his brother Paul (winning sometimes). Don was also a director of CYO Basketball with Jack Maloney in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. He also coached JV Basketball at Cathedral in 1983. Card playing was either pitch or gin rummy at SCC or the West Springfield Senior Center.

His working career started at Longmeadow Country Club where he was the starter and where he met some fine members who helped him venture into the Industrial world at Van Norman, Jahn Foundry, American Saw, Newell Rubbermaid and Black and Decker. He worked for 36 years at Lenox, a fine company, great people and a great career.

Don is survived by his wife and “guide by my side” Joan (Dorman) Quinn, who he enjoyed sharing their life together for 48 years. They had two daughters and one son, Jodi Gaudette (Michael) of Tobyhanna, PA, Karen Purcell of Springfield and Stephen Purcell Red Oak, IA. He has one brother Paul, (Jean), one sister Mary Bargatti (Lou), nephews Tony and Joe Bargatti, Robert Aldrich, niece Kim Sullivan and nephew and godson Brian Quinn. He was proud of all the grandchildren and great grandchildren he had (25). He was predeceased by his brother Jim, sister Betty Platten (Chuck) and sister Patty Aldrich.

A special thanks to Dave Keaney for supporting Donnie daily during his illness. Dr. John Bedford has also been a strong advocate for Donnie and Joan during their journey.

Don’s committal service with Military Honors will be at the Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Agawam Wednesday May 29th at 3:00 pm. The O’Brien Family Funeral Home in South Hadley has been entrusted with the arrangements. Donations may be made to the CHH Wig Boutique Fund at Cancer House of Hope, 1999 Westfield St., West Springfield, MA 01089.
