Aug. 5, 2009, one week after participating in the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride across Iowa (RAGBRAI), Mr. Donald (Don) Lee Riggs died doing something he loved, riding his bike. He was 65 years young. The suddenness of his departure has left the entire community in shock.Don was renowned for his creativity and athleticism. He could outride most riders half his age. Write, direct, film, edit and produce videos on a shoestring. Loved fine dining, dogs and intelligent creative people. Detested small mindedness, narrow opinions, cruelty to animals and the weak. Never ate a McDonald's hamburger. Wore a Vietnam War Missing in Action bracelet until his death. He ate massive amounts of ice cream and homemade pie, but only occasionally. Don had high expectations for both people and food. La Fiesta was the only restaurant in Enid he would frequent and he was passionate about tequila and Mexican beer.Don was born June 7, 1944, in Oakland, Calif., the son of Orval and Mildred Riley Riggs. Don was employed by Groendyke Transport as their creative director, where he was frequently referred to as "that California guy who never wore socks." A graduate of Freemont High School and the renowned San Francisco State University Film School with a degree in film and communication provided him with the expertise to create training videos and printed media. Don loved what he did, and it showed in the quality of his work. In addition to his bike riding, Don's second home and love was the YMCA, where he participated in racquetball, weight lifting and spinning. An adrenaline junkie from birth, he enjoyed bike riding, weight lifting, skydiving, hiking and Gojo-Ryu karate. He was preceded in death by his sister, Gail Aubert, and is survived by his parents, Orval and Mildred Riggs of Oakland, Calif.; his partner in life, Kimberly Nicholson; three children, Orion Riggs of Sydney, Australia, Destiny Riggs of Lawrence, Kan., and Skye Laurel Riggs of Guemes, Wash.; grandchildren, Electra and Roman Marshall; his best friends, Mark and Mary Buthman of Enid; his best four-leggeds, Maverick and Sydney, along with numerous friends and co-workers.A memorial celebration of Don's life is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at the Groendyke Lodge located at 1109 W. Lake Hellums Road. For more information, call Edana Neundorf at (580) 213-9277. Condolences may be made to the family online at brown-cummings .com.(Paid Obit 8-12-1)

I just found out about Don's passing today. I knew Don from Sky Sports another lifetime ago. Blue Skies, buddy.

You took the time to listen and teach me a long time ago. I will continue to pass on what you shared with me at Sky Sports. Blue skies!

Don, the last time I saw you was in Florida. You were at a phone booth by KMart trying to find our phone number and I was at KMart to buy something and looked up and there you were! You parked your semi somewhere and Dale and you and I laughed and talked about old times. I hope you've found those happy trails and those forever blue skies. I'll sing The Sky is Crying for you tomorrow. Debby Boyer, Rockledge, FL

I just heard about Don and am very sad that he is gone and we had been out of touch for so long. I met Don when he started skydiving at Sky Sports in Hutchinson, KS. I have just started organizing a Sky Sports reunion and Don was one of the people I was most looking forward to seeing. Maybe in another lifetime. Blue Skies Don.

Your dad bought posters once a month from our company for many years. . .I looked forward each month to his call or visit. Don was a very unique, and infectiously funny individual who held each day in his hands and laughed at it.. . he made me laugh at it, too.
He shared his intelligence, spirit and dark humor with me once a month for many years, and i was broken hearted when he had to go. Please know that he was a man who touched many. . . and will be deeply missed .

Your Dad was a unique individual, and there will never be another like him. I had the distinct pleasure of working with him, and more importantly to me, we were friends. Hippies in our former lives, we had lots in common, and oh, the stories we told each other! I looked forward to seeing him each day, and now the days are sad and quiet. I will miss him always, and count myself among the lucky people who knew and loved him.

Whoever wrote the obituary did a beautiful job of capturing his spirit. Don was an original.
I've been thinking about him with fondness ever since I heard the sad news. He worked for me for most of the 1980's, as a video producer. Don was an inspiring and challenging friend and colleague.
The project I keep thinking about was a drunk driving public service announcement he wrote and directed called "Livin' on the Edge". It was a music video in the earliest days of the...

Don, You were a great person and an excellent rider. We rode "Spin Your Wheels" this past weekend in honor of you. Even though I told you I had no desire to ever do a century ride, it is now in my near future plans. Thanks for being such an inspiration.
