Not sure what to say?

I have just learned of Don's death and am crushed. A gem of a man. I knew him when he was on faculty at Old Dominion and when I did a stint as a professor for a year. I always think of him when I see a covered bridge or the giant globe in Hamilton, Ontario.

Dr Z and I collaborated on geography education and GIS initiatives... I already miss him greatly. --Joseph Kerski

I've known Don for several years through the AP Human Geography readings and professional academic organizations. He was a gentle sole, with a keen eye for the world around him and its connections. A true geographer in his broad observations of life. My last breakfast with him (he loved the oatmeal at Cold Pressed) was this past Thanksgiving. I will keep his kind words in my heart.

I cherish my memories of friendship with Don and Debbie and their family. They loved to visit Maine. (Photo during an early visit with me in Camden.) In fact, when Don visited me again in the Fall of 1992, we drove to Machias and Jonesport and saw all the bays and estuaries along the "Down East" coast. On my most recent, and regrettably last visit with the family during a trip I made to Virginia Beach, I met Robert once again, after seeing him as a boy in Maine. Don and I were University...

In loving memory of a wonderful teacher, mentor and friend. I will love you and miss you always.

Don was a remarkable human being and a highly distinguished professional. We were colleagues in the School of Arts and Letters at ODU. I remember once in the 1990s when I was in an art museum in Washington, DC, and Don saw me while he was guiding a group of his ODU students. His students studied the painting he had just lectured on while Don came over and greeted me warmly for a minute or so, and then, without missing a note, so to speak, he returned to his students to continue his...

Sending my sincere condolences to Don's family. Don was a wonderful colleague at all those AP Human Geography Readings! I always enjoyed his ready wit and smile! Carol Ann Gillespie

My deepest sympathies to Don's family. I had the pleasure of getting to know him through NCGE and he was always in good spirits when talking about geography! Don was a great listener as well as storyteller and eager to help other teachers share their passion for our field. He leaves a wonderful legacy in geography education.

I am so sorry to hear about Don's passing. I was the Associate Director of the NCGE when Don was president in 1997. He was always so caring, inspiring and upbeat. He immediately made you feel like a friend. Condolences.
