I have fond memories of Dora. She was small, energetic, tidy and fastidious. It surprised me when she told me that she would the run the empty community washing machine in her building to make extra sure it was clean before she used it to wash her own clothes! It was a great contrast with the time during the siege of St. Petersburg when people couldn't even wash their hair. She once told me that Irene was her major project in life. I will always cherish the time I got to know aunt Dora.

I'm truly very sorry to learn that Dora passed away three years and 3 months ago. She befriended me when I was teaching in the languages and literatures department at ASU from 1981 to 1988. We often talked and she sometimes took me to Hillel for delicious lunches. She was a meticulous, conscientious and principled person who also had a great sense of humor. I know that her life was not easy and I appreciated the way in which she managed to always affirm that which was human and humane. I'm...

Dora was one of the kindest and most caring of my colleagues at ASU. She was a delightful person, with whom I always enjoyed chatting. We will all miss her very much.

In a newspaper article written about our Russian language program at ASU in 1991 I termed Dora Burton, who had just won our College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' Dean's Quality Teaching Award, a "human treasure." In her last days she asked me if I remembered "what I said about her in the newspaper." Indeed I remember.
