Flint, Michigan
CAMPBELL (Smith), Doreen S. - age 55, of Flint Township, died peacefully at home on Friday, February 12, 2010 after a 15-year battle with breast cancer. Per Doreen's wishes, cremation has taken place. To honor her memory, please join her family and friends at a Buddhist memorial service to be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. Doreen's family will be present at the funeral home to receive family and friends between 12 noon-2 p.m. on the day of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Tenth Life Cat Shelter, 3415 Hull, Flint, MI 48507 or Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, c/o 1133 E. Bristol Road, Burton, MI 48529. Doreen (along with her alter-ego, best friend and life-long companion - her twin, Kathy) was born December 5, 1954 in Flint, the daughter of Richard and Yaeko Smith. She graduated from Flushing High School and lived her entire life in the Flint-Flushing area. She worked as Stockroom and Quality Control supervisor for Nu-Vision for 24 years, and for the last 10 years she was a bus driver for Genesee Intermediate School District, where she provided kindness, sensitivity and affection for her beloved students. She also worked summers and weekends as a driver for Blue Lakes Charters and Tours for 7 years. Known for her fun-loving but quirky sense of humor, Doreen had a positive impact on all who knew her. Throughout her struggles with cancer, she was the epitome of courage and strength of character. She fought cancer with a positive attitude and her desire for the preservation of "quality of life", thus living longer and stronger than her expected prognosis. She focused her energies toward helping other people, love for her family, beautifying her yard, and providing a loving home for her pets: the love of her life, Australian Shepherd "Lady" and sweet kitties - Meow-Meow, Kitty-Kitty and Chloe. She was a member of the local Buddhist chapter of Soka Gakkai International, serving in leadership capacities during the healthier phases of her life. Doreen is survived by a loving family including: two daughters, Wendy and husband Ray Thorington of Millington, Amy and husband Al Lowell of Mt. Morris; her twin sister, Kathy and husband Ted McIntosh of Flushing; sister, Norma and husband Dennis Bowles of Flint; brother Jim and wife Pam Smith of Flint; brother, Ed and wife Sue Smith of Flushing; sister, Mary Smith of Flint; grandchildren, Ajia, Allison (and husband, Ryan), Jaye, Samantha, Yaeko, Autum and RJ; great-granddaughter, Quinn; nephews, Steve, David and Trent; nieces, Angie and Jennie; aunt, Mary Hayes of Harrison; uncle, John Smith and wife Linda; cousins and a multitude of friends and acquaintances. She was preceded in death by parents, Richard and Yaeko Smith; grandchildren, Tabitha and Jacob, niece, Jamie Smith. Heartfelt thanks to Linda, Beverly and Kim of Avalon Hospice for their friendship, kindness and comfort, as well as all Avalon staff. Doreen was especially grateful to her oncologist, Dr. Rizwan Danish, who accommodated her desire for "quality of life." Your condolences may be shared with the family at swartzfuneralhomeinc.com

Crossing the Bar
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may...
