The Dream Job
Long after her friends had left the nest and set up homes of their own, Doris Eng was still sharing an apartment in Flushing, Queens, with her mother, Sui-Kam Eng. Doris, club manager for Windows on the World on the 107th floor of 1 World Trade Center, was single-minded in her devotion to her mother, a garment worker whose husband died last year. "Everything she did was for my mom," her younger brother, Jerry, 27, said in a telephone interview as his mother sobbed in the background. "She cared about other people more than herself."

Doris was also devoted to her work. A graduate of New York University, she had worked in some of the city's finest establishments — Le Cirque, the Mayfair Hotel and the Warwick Hotel — but her job at Windows was, he said, a dream come true. She worked from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m., and sometimes came in on the weekends.

A network administrator for the City Council, Jerry was on his way to work last Tuesday when he saw the first plane hit. He tried to make his way into the building to rescue his sister but was rebuffed by the police. "That's the hardest part," he said. "I witnessed everything happen."

Not sure what to say?

I always knew I had some semblance of connection to the disaster when I first learned of a family friend who passed in it. Surprised it took nearly 20 years to learn your name. Once I did I knew I had to research everything I possibly could and I am so glad I did. Reading tributes, obituaries, and all these comments, Doris sounds like such an amazing, selfless soul. Something the world desperately needs and was unfortunately taken by unspeakable evil. I hope wherever you are now is beautiful....

Remembering Doris on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

Dear family of Doris:

My brother Mark never met her but he has created a tribute to your daughter and sister. But he is a painter. He found her photo haunting and painted it that way. He has made hundreds of paintings in his life but I always found the one he painted of Doris to be his best. It hangs in my entryway and visitors always comment on it.

I just wanted you to know that her image continues to touch people these many years and many miles distant from when and...

To the family and friends of Doris,

I attended school with Doris in NYU's Hotel & Restaurant program. Along with her friend Jenny, the three of us were responsible for preparing a meal in our Science of Food class. Our efforts to make New Orleans-style food went much better through her contributions than mine, as I had little actual food experience to draw upon. Doris had good humor throughout our task, from everything starting from our food search in the supermarket to service. ...
