Doris Scheffler Obituary

Doris May Mudd Scheffler, a retired Elementary School Teacher, passed away on August 3rd 2018 at the age of 93 years and 3 mos. Survived by her four children, Stephen (wife Patricia Ciolino), Anthony (wife Kelly Heckaman), Michael (wife Kimberly Kryscio), Mark (wife Patricia Daves); nine grandchildren, Paul Scheffler (wife Michelle Shannahan), Katherine Scheffler Pyles (husband Brian Pyles), Sara Stokes (husband Jared), Andrew Heckaman, Brennan Scheffler, Jared Scheffler, Ann Scheffler, Stacy Lancey (husband John), Cori Scheffler; and four great-grandchildren, Alex Lancey, Logan Lancey, Ava Stokes and James Thomas Stokes. Preceded in death by her husband Cleophas Joseph (Joe) Scheffler, her parents Joseph Herman Mudd and Mary Helen Mudd, her twin sister Dorothy Gibson and brother Jack Mudd. Doris was born in Yoakum, Texas, on May 11th 1925, along with her identical twin sister Dorothy, to Herman and Helen Mudd. She graduated from Anson High School in 1942 and attended college at North Texas State Teachers College (now University of North Texas) in Denton, Texas. She graduated in 1946 with a degree in Art and began work as an elementary school teacher in Midland, Texas. She married Joe Scheffler on February 17, 1947 and moved to Odessa, Texas where all four of her sons were born. After moving to Metairie, Louisiana in 1960, she was a dedicated stay at home mom raising her four boys while substitute teaching part time. During that time, she earned her Louisiana teaching certificate and in 1970 was offered a full time 3rd grade teacher position at Bissonet Plaza Elementary school where she spent 21 wonderful years. Doris was beloved by her co-workers and the hundreds of 3rd grade students she inspired during her memorable career at Bissonet. Recognized as the 1990 Bissonet Teacher of the Year, her class room was always a showcase for the inspiring, colorful bulletin boards she loved to hand craft with her students. She was very generous with her time, talent and treasure. Upon retirement she devoted time to working at the 'Second Glance' resale shop which funded several Catholic charities in the New Orleans area. Her talent and expertise in sewing was exemplified in the beautifully ornate and elaborate hand-made Barbie Doll dress ensembles she made and donated to many Catholic Church and school fund raisers. Her treasure was shared with a long list of charities she regularly supported. Doris was a devoted Catholic, a woman of wonderful character and great faith. She was loved by all who knew her. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at SAINT PHILIP NERI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 6500 Kawanee Ave., Metairie, LA. on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 11 AM. Visitation will begin at 10 AM. Interment at Metairie Cemetery. Special thanks for the loving care and concern provided by Sisters, Servants of Mary. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be mailed to Sisters, Servants of Mary at 5001 Perlita St., New Orleans, LA 70122-1999, (Website – https://sisterservantsofmary.org). I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to family and friends. It's times like these when the loving promises of our Heavenly Father such as knowing that we can see our loved ones again can bring us comfort and soften some of the pain we feel in our hearts. 1 Thessalonians 4: 13, 14

Mrs. Scheffler taught me Language Arts at Bissonet Plaza in the 4th grade. She became one of my favorite teachers, especially after casting me in the lead role of "The Cross Princess," which was supposed to be performed only for our class, but ended up being performed by the entire school. She was kind and fair, and took an interest in her students. She was a beloved teacher and I know she will be missed by many.

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years. May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.
