Doris Mae Sunderland, 91, of 716 Robert E. Lee Drive, Wilmington, NC died peacefully at her home on September 13, 2016.
She was born on August 30, 1925, in Westfield, NJ the daughter of the late Norman Edward and Mary Jones Hewison.
She was preceded in death by her first husband of 46 years, Robert F. Schlack, her brother, Robert E. Hewison, and her second husband of 12 years, Robert E. Sunderland, Jr.
Surviving are her children Lynne (Al) Toepke of North Carolina and Barry Schlack of Arizona, step-daughters Trish Greenberg of Florida, Jean (Eric) Wibbens of Virginia, and Janet (Bob) Warren of Maryland; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Doris was an active member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, loved family and friends (old & new), enjoyed traveling, flowers and orchids, and playing pinochle & mahjong. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and "Great-Great" and will be dearly missed by all.
Services will be held at Andrews Valley Chapel (4108 S. College Road) on Saturday, Nov. 5. Visitation begins at 1pm with a Chapel service at 2pm. A graveside burial will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens.

Doris was an amazing, courageous lady until the end!!I miss her, but she will hold a special place in my heart forever.

Looking at her photo I still can't believe she is gone. She was quite a special person! She will be missed by everyone, but I know she is in a better place for her now.
