Doris E. Thorn, age 90, of Shelton, CT passed away on January 20, 2014. Doris was the widow of Phillip Dorf. Born in Plattsville, New York on November 7, 1923 she was a daughter of the late Rev. Ralph S. Thorn Sr., and Pauline Bender Thorn. Doris was predeceased by her siblings, Paul Thorn, Mary Lou Thorn Kline, Marjorie Thorn Cook, John Thorn, Rev. Ralph S. Thorn, Jr. and C. William (Bill) Thorn and nieces Nan Thorn Clements, Tracy Thorn, & Pamela Thorn Reader. Doris is survived by her nieces, Elaine Thorn (David) Hughes, Mary Lou (Gordon) Martin, Betsy Thorn, Barbara Kline, Lorie Kline, and Holly (James) DeJarnette and nephews Greg (Suzanne) Kline, John (Karen) Cook, Wesley, Jeff (Norma) & Paul Thorn, and sisters-in-law Gloria Thorn, Marion Thorn, and Edie Kline. Doris was a fine Soprano Soloist, with a collection of hymns released onto both record and CD. She enjoyed painting, and at the age of 82 her work was shown on Channel 8 an art gallery feature, which led to congratulations from the Mayor of Derby, CT. At age 89 she authored and published her book, "Casting Light on the Mystery of God in You," a book on spirituality for our time. During her time as a resident of Crosby Commons in Shelton, CT, Doris initiated, led, and participated in numerous activities in the community; including lending her beautiful voice to worship services and special programs, starting a chorus, leading a prayer circle, a drama club, and conducting an Angel Study Group. For her efforts to fulfill both her own goals and the goals of others, she was awarded the first ever "Distinguished Resident Accomplishment Award" in December 2012. She will be missed by many of her friends and acquaintances at Crosby Commons and The Wicke Health Center. In accordance with her wishes, she will be cremated. Arrangements are in care of BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Ave, Hamden. Family and friends may attend her Memorial Service at Crosby Commons Assisted Living, 580 Long Hill Avenue, Shelton on Saturday, February 8th, at 1:30 PM. In addition, a private celebration of her life will be conducted at Montauk, L.I. in the summer. Contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
