I met Doris while writing a newspaper story about winter bikers, those hardy types who bundle up and keep pedaling all year round, and are usually about 25 or 30.
I was stunned to find out that one of Ann Arbor's devoted winter bikers was Doris, then in her 80s! Doris matter-of-factly told me that the secret was dressing in layers of Gortex.
I think the secret was her joy of living, or whatever made her ride the Huron River bike paths to doctor's appointments at St....

Doris will be deeply missed. I always enjoyed the chance to see Doris (usually out on her tricycle) while I was cycling or just simply out and about in the Ann Arbor area. Her involvement with the cycling community and bubbly warm personality were very inspiring, will be greatly missed, and long remembered.
I feel privileged to have known Doris.

Please accept my condolences on the passing of your Mom. Expressing an interest in adult tricycles I was invited by Doris last fall to try out the tricycles in her shed to see if I liked tricycling. I used to bike but had become afraid of falling. Your mom was so excited to share her love of bicycling and told us about her trips across lower Michigan, being the only one with an adult tricycle. She was so happy that she rode one of her bikes around the yard. We could see how difficult it...

Shiela and family,
I remember when Doris turned 65 on Pedal Across Lower Michigan. As a new biker, I could not believe that anyone her age could ride across the state on a tricycle! When I told one of the local shop owners what she was doing he was so impressed that he send a gym full of balloons for all the kids on PALM to help her celebrate. She created joy and laughter everywhere she went and continued to ride for at least 25 more years!

Doris chats with AA's Mayor Hieftje
Doris was a longtime supporter of the Washtenaw Bicycling and Walking Coalition and was the highlight of our 4th of July parade contingent for many years. She was inspirational in so many ways and had a great sense of humor too. I will miss her.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Doris. I was Doris's hairstyist for some 35 years and was honored to have known her. We had some wonderful conversations, and she always had a great story. I will miss her greatly. I just found out today of her passing, I was in Fla. at the time of her death and was shocked when they told me at Evangelico that she had passed on Feb, 24. I will always remember her riding her Trike in the middle of the winter all bundled up with snow on the roads, to come...
