Dorothy "Dot" Ann Bowens was born on August 17, 1960, to the union of the late Excell and Annie Mae Bowens. She departed this life at the age of sixty-five.
Dorothy was educated in the New Orleans Public School System and later attended Delta College of New Orleans. As she grew older, she became affectionately known as Ms. Dot or Nanny Dot, wearing many hats throughout her life. One role she especially loved was serving her neighbors by helping their children safely on and off the school bus. To many families, she was their very own personal crossing guard. This simple act of kindness brought Ms. Dot great joy and purpose. Even years later, many of those children, now adults, would greet her with a smile and say, “Ms. Dot, I remember when you used to walk me to school.” What a true blessing she was to the B.W. Cooper Community, also known as the Calliope Projects and currently the Marrero Commons.
Later in life, Dorothy joined the Better Boys Social Aid and Pleasure Club, where she proudly showcased her footwork throughout the city of New Orleans. Prior to that, she served as an honorary member of the Lady Sequence Social Aid and Pleasure Club.
Throughout her life, she held various jobs, including working for the United States Postal Service and Bertha’s Lounge. However, one of her most memorable roles was serving as a hostess at Landry’s Seafood, where she warmly welcomed guests and conveniently enjoyed their delicious seafood platters. Dorothy truly embraced life wholeheartedly and worked diligently until health challenges arose.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her loving memories her beloved children: Warren Bowens, Lillie Mae Bowens, and Eddie Bowens (Kristy); her grandchildren: Sarai Eubanks, Mekhi Bowens, Mia Bowens, Skyy Bowens, and Rayne Bowens; two brothers: Louis James Cooper (Aldonia) and Michael Bowens (Rochelle); three sisters: Ruth Jean Harton (Willie), Excedean Bowens, and Debbie Bowens Meyers (Glenn); her godchildren: James and Jamie Bannister, and Nikita Milton; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many special friends whose lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her parents, Excell and Annie Mae Bowens; her sister Naomi Carter; and her grandson, Jeremiah Eubanks.
We loved Dorothy dearly, but God loved her best. In the words of Ms. Dot herself:“I’ve run my race, I’ve finished my course, and I’ve earned my wings.” And if you truly knew Ms. Dorothy, then all that’s left to say is: “Well, that’s it!”
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Funeral Service on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Willing Workers Baptist Church, 2715 Washington Ave., New Orleans, LA, at 10:00 am. Visitation begins at 9:00 am. Interment: St. Roch #2 Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Dennis Funeral Home, 1812 Louisiana Ave., New Orleans, LA.
