Warm Comfort in Routine
Dorothy Morgan never dressed up in stunning gowns like those in her Holiday Barbie doll collection. The fairy tale extravagance of the dolls seemed to contradict her own more conservative style. She wore solid colors and had a keen eye for bargains — Deloryce Bright, a longtime friend, called her the Coupon Queen — and preferred Chinese takeout to cooking at home.
Ms. Morgan, 47, was the fifth of nine children of working-class parents, growing up in Hempstead, N.Y. She worked in Marsh & McLennan's confidential service department, where she was a broker, assisting celebrities and high-profile clients.
She found warm comfort in routine, visiting her mother on Fridays and shopping with her daughter, Nykiah, on Saturdays. Sunday morning was always spent at church in Jamaica, Queens, in the same seat of the same pew.
Though she was a loving grandmother, buying clothes and toys for her 4-year-old grandson, Dante, and paying for his preschooling, she preserved her own independence. "She was no baby sitter," said Nykiah Morgan.

We lost touch when I left Aetna in 1993, and in 2001, just a few days before 9-11 I saw her at Marsh, as I was there for a meeting. I can still hear her say, Is that you Dave??? I got the best hug, and the biggest smile that day. We were so happy to see eachother as were going to be working together again. Dorothy's division at...

I can never forget that fateful day. Being called into work to do what we could to help. I worked with Mrs. Morgan's daughter Nykiah at Verizon Communications in Hempstead. It tore my heart out to watch Nikki continuing to travel into NYC each day following the disaster, looking for ANY sign of Mrs. Morgan. WE will never forget, and our love for all these HERO's grows year after year. RIP Mrs. Dorothy Morgan.
