I remember Dody and her striking independent personality very well. She was a student in one of my Algae courses in the 1980s, I believe. During the class field trip to the Malheur Field Station on the Malheur National Refuge, South of Burns, OR. she demonstrated her special style of independence by bringing her own extra food-a cabbage, bread, cheese and whisky...which she generously shared a sip or two with me. She was also the only student I ever had who carried a sun protecting umbrella...

We were so sorry to hear of Dody's death. She became our friend after we met her at the Peace Action Committee at First Unitarian Church, where she was a valued member. Her spirit lives on.
