Barto Funeral Home - Spring Valley Obituary

Dorothy Rogel “Dots”, 88, of Spring Valley, who loved to be called “Mom” by her kids, departed peacefully while surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at St. Margaret’s Health in Spring Valley.

Funeral services for Dorothy will begin at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 4, at the Barto Funeral Home in Spring Valley, with Fr. Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Vincent’s Cemetery in LaSalle.  The visitation for Dorothy will be held Saturday, at the funeral home, from 9:00 AM until time of funeral services.

Dorothy was born in Depue, IL on May 18, 1934 to John and Lucille (Bierbrodt) Rettko.

Dorothy married Ernest Rogel on January 10, 1953 at St. Roch’s Catholic Church in LaSalle, IL.  She raised her children with love and devotion in Spring Valley.

She is survived by her children, Linda (Bob) Aber of Sheffield, IL, John (Nancy) Rogel of Vista, CA, and Joe (Candice) Rogel of Morris, IL; her grandchildren, Bobby, Stacey, Ian, Cristina, Brittany, Amber, Danielle, Dominic and Michael; and great grandchildren, Mark, Breanna, Austin, Ashton, Ayda and Parker.

Dorothy cooked at Toni’s Texas Inn in Spring Valley for many years, and afterwards, until retirement, worked as a Patient Advocate at Spring Valley Nursing Center, where she was known for her caring, compassionate nature.  She loved her dog Fritz and her hobbies included music, camping, fishing, and visiting with friends.  She was known for her unconditional love, optimistic personality, and quick-witted sense of humor.

She was very proud of her membership to “Giant Goose” Kewanee Chapter Izaak Walton League of America.

She is predeceased in death by her loving husband Ernest; her sons Steven and Ernest Jr; her parents; her siblings, Donald, Elaine, Jack, Lois, Ken, and Richard; and her late partner of many years, Louis Marfell.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family.
