Dorothy Schulte Obituary

Dorothy Alice Schulte Dorothy Alice Schulte went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 6th, 2013. She passed away with some of her nine children by her side almost 7 years to the day that her beloved husband Al died. Dorothy lived quite an extraordinary and exemplary life, full of love for her large family. She was born Dorothy DeVaere in Huntington Park California on February 24, 1923, the eldest of four children. Her father emigrated from Tielt in Flanders, Belgium, shortly after WWI. Her mother came to the US as an infant from Tipperary, Ireland. She attended Huntington Park High School in California, graduating in 1941. She was later employed as a secretary. Following World War II in late 1945 she was introduced on a blind date to the love of her life, Al Schulte. He had recently returned from the War, fighting in the Pacific theatre. They were married in 1946. Their first child Ann was born in 1947 and they settled in Whittier CA, where they had 7 more children. In 1963 they moved to Woodlake, CA and bought the Sentinel Butte Ranch, a cattle and citrus ranch in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. There Dorothy had her happiest memories and just loved living on the ranch, where she had the last of her nine children, Paul. She so enjoyed going to her boys football and baseball games and her daughters swim meets. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and going on road trips with her husband Al. She was also an avid reader. In 1984 they bought their home in Bend, Oregon. They would spend six months of the year in Bend. Dorothy just loved the Bend area and loved the change of seasons. She so loved it when it snowed. When Al died in 2006 she moved to Bend permanently. Her children feel she was the greatest loving mother the world has known. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Alfred, and her sister Mary. She is survived by her children Ann, Tom, Matt, Jane, Dan, Nancy, Ellen, David and Paul, 16 grand children, 6 great-grandchildren with two more on the way, and her brothers Joe and Johnny. She was a devoted grandmother and beloved great-grandmother (GG) Mom was a huge Basketball fan, from the Utah Jazz to College Basketballs March Madness. "To honor this, the Family requests in lieu of flowers, please send donations to: the The V Foundation for Cancer Research, 106 Towerview Court, Cary NC 27513 www.jimmyv.org.
