Dorothy Bradford Wendler passed away peacefully Saturday, June 1st, 2024 at the age of 102.  Born in Shirley, MA, the daughter of Lewis Herman Bradford and Margaret Longley, she spent her early academic years in the Shirley area before graduating from Bryant & Stratton Commercial School in Boston in 1941. Dorothy and John moved to West Springfield in 1948. They owned and operated Peterson’s Opticians in Holyoke for many years. John passed away March 17, 2003.

Dorothy’s devotion to her family was her greatest pleasure and greatest gift.  Dorothy loved music and was a talented piano and organ player.  She was a member of the Lutheran Church and enjoyed singing in the choir, the Sounds of Music Club, the Red Hat Society at the Holyoke Soldiers Home and the Shirley Historical Society. She loved socializing with friends, including a weekly meeting of her Luncheon Group.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Philip and Helen Edwards Wendler, Paul and Rebecca Rich Wendler and Karen Wendler; two grandchildren, Leila (Charles Dunnigan) and John; and two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Haley Dunnigan.

Not sure what to say?

Dorothy was a wonderful woman always treated me and my workers great and would offer water in those hot summer days of taking care of her Lawn. Miss talking to her and seeing how she was doing.I-Hop isn't the same without her and her friends.

Single Memorial Tree

I was her care taker and we had a wonderful time and I was always so looking forward to caring for her. As she loved the birds and loved reading books on horses . She always shines brighter than the sun at day and brighter than the stars at night and now she will be the brightest star in the sky at night and the most beautiful angel in flight. Dorothy will be very missed and always remembered as she was my #1.

Our family matriarch blessed with a natural grace and a unique kindness.

I WAS HER HAIRDRESSER FOR MANY GREAT YEARS , AND WE BECAME GREAT FRIENDS I WILL MISS HER DEARLY , AND I HAVE ALOT OF GREAT MEMORIES LYNN

Karen, Phil and Paul,

Your mom was a charming lady with a twinkly smile, a keen mind and a kind heart. We were privileged to know her and your dad.
