Tempe Mortuary - Tempe Obituary

Dorothy Verna (Couture) Whitney, 93, born April 4, 1928 in Worcester MA, passed away on February 23, 2022.  Dorothy was the twin sister of Darlene (Couture) Leavitt who passed away in 2013.  Her mother, Lola (Bewell) Couture, was born in Horton Bay Michigan and was also a twin.  Lola died three weeks after the twins were born.  Dorothy’s father was Leo Couture who was a direct descendent of Guillaume Couture who came to Quebec, Canada from Rouen France around 1637.  During WW2 Dorothy worked at the Raytheon Defense plant in Waltham, MA where she made vacuum tubes for the war effort.  Dorothy was living in Watertown, MA at this time and met Edward Whitney in 1946 after he returned from the war.  They were married in 1949.  During the Korean War they moved to Virginia and Edward worked for the Army Security Agency. They had two children, Richard and Larry.  Larry passed away in 2013.  Dorothy and Edward moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1982 and lived in Ahwatukee.  Edward passed away in 2005.  Dorothy enjoyed sewing, arts and crafts, reading, crossword puzzles, games, and traveling.  Dorothy is survived by her son Richard Whitney (and his wife Lisa), two grandsons Thomas (and his wife Sophie) and Michael, and a sister Helen (Couture) Ford.

Dorothy will be laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona with her beloved husband, privately.
