Lucky Beyond the Odds

Doug Jason Irgang had the kind of jaw-dropping luck that could win a lottery, or save a life. A financial trader, he was there when the trade center was bombed in 1993. And he was on board the Long Island Rail Road train when Colin Ferguson went on a rampage. "Talk about somebody who was able to get out of touchy situations," said his friend Lisa Saffian. "We're hoping that his luck holds." Mr. Irgang, 32, was even lucky in love. Riding the No. 4 train to work daily, he noticed that the same young woman was reading his newspaper over his shoulder. This being New York, they barely exchanged hellos. Then one day, the woman, Kristin Ladner, scribbled her phone number on the newspaper and told him to call. He did. They were engaged a year and a half later, and set a wedding date for this Dec. 22.

Sup Doug, 9:02 on 9/11 Still remember every detail about our last conversation.

NYCB - waiting for that look

Doug and I grew up together in Roslyn. We were good friends from elementary school through high school and thereafter. He and Kristin attended my wedding and I was greatly looking forward to doing the same for him. Doug had such a positive personality and zest for life. He always had something funny to say, which usually left us rolling in laughter. I miss him dearly. Today, as every 9/11 anniversary, I think about Doug and the great times we shared. I pray for his family and Kristin. I try...

Dear Doug, I miss you so very
much. I swim in your honor
every day. I dream that I was
was with you that morning and
that I rescued you. You are
with me every day.

Every 9-11 anniversary I think of Doug. We were good friends at Tulane. We lived on the same floor freshman year and lived together at Cherokee apts the remaining 3 years.

Doug was a person you felt comfortable talking to and just hanging. When I used to visit new York I would visit Doug and we would go out on the town

Doug attended my wedding and I was loking forward to attending his wedding in Arizona.

I miss Doug very much. He was very much loved.

I worked for a fund in Virginia that was a customer of Sandler, and I spoke to Doug on the phone usually several times a week. He worked hard for our business. There are a couple things I’ll always remember about Doug. He always seemed happy and enthusiastic, and he had an eternally youthful voice. When I’d pick up the phone and ask him how it was going, he’d always say, "Good, good," in a distinctive way. Small, insignificant things, but they’re ingrained in my memory, so I thought I...

Doug, I remember you from the school bus. You were a friend and u are missed.

I worked with Doug's brother, Steve, during the time of the attacks. I was in the West Coast branch of the firm we worked for. The tragic events of September 11th struck all of us so hard, both in the San Francisco office and the NYC office. I was deeply moved by loss that Steve suffered and then at his intense drive and dedication to help others who lost friends and family members. I did not know Doug, but heard so much about him from Steve. Reading these posts has touched me beyond...

Although I did not personally know Doug, through the 9/11 Memorial page on Facebook, my profile has been dedicated for honoring and remembering him on this anniversary. I had no one involved that day ten years ago, so I chose to honor someone I did not know. May he and his family and friends be blessed and may they find peace.
