Douglas Bingham would've loved being remembered as "Mr. Sidecar." It wasn't without merit, after all. For decades, he'd run a shop in Van Nuys that fixed, designed and customized the rigs that attached to the sides of motorcycles. It was his passion - going back to the first time he got out of...

I am only learning now about Doug's demise, and so, so sorry. Unfortunately , we hadn't worked together (we, as his freight forwarder for importing Watsonian sidecars) since our last job in 2006, and we had not spoken since 2015 when I called to see how he was doing . I just happened to REFER HIM AGAIN--as I did all the years--to anyone who needed a sidecar, or advice--and I just decided to google his name...... I also had the honor of assisting one of his AA brothers by importing a...

Doug enabled me to purchase in 2009 a sidecar and ride across the US with my daughter, Helen, before I was to face "life or death" heart surgery. He silently understood that this was a last journey, performed by a novice, that was a key part of my saying goodbye to the country I had loved and served as a veteran. He guided me and encouraged me for no fee or reward. He invited me to the Griffith Park rally and brought me into the world of friendship and good will he had created in the...

R.I.P. "MR. SIDECAR"
I just went on Side Strider to e-mail Doug when I read the bad news...I met Doug over 30 years ago when I brought Doug my first Sidecar to have him mount it to my Bike so my Daughter, Wife and I could Ride together and it's just my Wife and I now but we still have a HACK of a Good Time Riding! When I went to Doug about setting up my second Sidecar on a different Bike, Doug took the time to show and explain how to mount a Sidecar up the correct way and showed me the tricks to mount it...

I AM FROM ENSENADA, MEXICO, AN AVID MOTORCYCLIST, ON AND OFF ROAD. I SAW HIM 3-4 TIMES AT THE RALLLY IN GRIFFITH PARK. BUT WHEN I DECIDED THAT I WANT TO KNOW MORE OF THE SIDECAR THING, WENT TO HIS SHOP, TALK TO HIM, I WANTED SOMETHING LIKE A KLR 650 COMBO, BUT HE TOLD ME NO, HE TOLD ME THAT WILL BE TOO SOFT, TOO BOUNCY, THEN HE INVITED ME INTO HIS TRIUMPH COMBO, HE PUT ME IN THE SIDECAR, WE WENT FOR A HARD RIDE NEAR HIS SHOP, BUT KIND OF DIRT ROAD, CROSSING SEVERAL TIMES TRAIN TRACKS TO...

I am deeply saddened to hear that Doug has left us. I got to know him way back in the late 1960's at one of his Griffith Park Sidecar rallies. Doug was truly a leader in the sidecar universe. He was a gentle person as well as a gentleman. He will most assuredly be missed. I hope he has managed to locate a suitable rig to pilot wherever he needs to travel from here on. My condolences to Doug's extended family. May God Bless all. Take care, my friend, and keep an eye open for me,as I will be...
