It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas “Doug” John Buessing, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Doug passed away on November 17, 2025, at the age of 78.
Doug was born on October 22, 1947, in Merced, California, to Paul and Bernice “Bea” Buessing. One of seven children, he was raised on the family dairy farm, where he learned the values of hard work, responsibility, and service to others. As the oldest son, Doug naturally stepped into a leadership role, offering a steady hand, a strong work ethic, and unwavering dependability. He graduated from Merced High School and Fresno State University.
On October 16, 1971, Doug married Janice “Jan” Walther. Together they began their life in Oxnard, California, eventually settling in Gilroy in 1979 with their three children, Jim, Michael, and Carolyn. Around this time, Doug began what would become a distinguished 50+ year career with TriCal, Inc. Throughout his tenure, Doug was instrumental in the company’s growth and success. He led by example, firm but fair, deeply knowledgeable, and unafraid to roll up his sleeves. Colleagues knew him as a mentor; someone who took pride in doing things right and helping others do the same.
Family was at the center of everything Doug did. He was generous, kind, humorous, and deeply devoted to the wellbeing of those he loved. He provided guidance freely, offered help without hesitation, and found immense joy in supporting his children and grandchildren. To know Doug was to feel cared for.
Doug never strayed far from his farming roots. In recent years, he found fulfillment in cultivating pistachio orchards alongside his family, spending countless weekends tending the trees, checking water lines, and nurturing the land with quiet dedication.
He also had a passion for classic cars and took pride in restoring and showcasing his 1929 Ford Model A and 1962 Chevy Impala. Participating in local car shows and parades brought him great pleasure, and he was often recognized with awards for his craftsmanship and enthusiasm.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Jan Buessing; his children, Jim Buessing, Michael Buessing (Nicole), and Carolyn Baptista (Brian); and his grandchildren: Kyle, Lindsey, and Zachary Buessing, Christopher and Kendal Buessing, and Adam Baptista. He is also survived by his siblings Ann Johnston, Donna Buessing, Audrey Peguero, Bill Buessing, Richard Buessing, and Mimi Moss, along with their families, and Denise Buessing. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Bea Buessing, and brothers-in-law Richard Peguero and Cliff Johnston.
Doug will be remembered for his loyalty, humor, and the gentle strength with which he cared for others. His legacy lives on in the family he nurtured, the work he dedicated himself to, and the countless lives he touched.
Services will be held on Monday, December 1, 2025, at St. Mary Parish, 11 First Street, Gilroy, California. A viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m.
