One of Douglas C. Desjardins Jr.'s loves was driving tanks. The soldier was recently promoted to gunner but still wanted to drive tanks. "He used to brag," said his father Desjardins Sr. "He would say how he saw a wild pig and shot it with his tank. He shot it with a big .50-caliber gun on his tank." Desjardins, 24, of Mesa, Ariz., was killed Nov. 5 in Ramadi from injuries suffered when a bomb detonated near his vehicle. He was a 2000 high school graduate and was assigned to Giessen, Germany. His family and friends called him "Dougie" throughout his childhood, but he didn't like it and preferred his military name, "DJ." DJ was adventurous and a "people person," his father said. He would "give a stranger the shirt off his back if he knew it would help." His stepmother, Barbara Desjardins, said he was shy as a boy, but "came out of his shell later in high school." He loved the Phoenix Suns and would try to attend games whenever he was home. "He always kept us laughing," said his mother, Cindy Surprenant. "He had a quick wit and a comeback to anything someone said." He also is survived by his stepfather, Jim Surprenant.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you...

COLD STEEL

A sad day is when you can't look and find all your brothers when the following day no one speaks just silence, tears, and reflection. DJ was a huge part of our family at Charlie Company. His jokes, smile, and cunning humor kept smiles on everyones face. May god bless his family and loved ones behind and know that you too are apart of our family. RIP brother you truly will be missed.
