Douglas Curry

We met in grade school and Doug was a softspoken youngster with a sheepish grin. As we grew up, just a stone´s throw away from each other´s home, that calm, cool and confident young man with a huge heart gave way to a tough, hardnosed competitor on the court. I knew Doug from tennis team. He was a strong competitor, and always the nicest person to be around; that combination of qualities is rare. He will be missed.

When I think of Doug Curry, the word that comes to mind is smooth. We played tennis on the same team, but he was playing a different game than me. He glided across the courts of tennis and basketball. You didn´t think he was going to get to the ball, and all of a sudden you realized the ball was coming across the net for the win! He wasn't even aware that I existed, but Doug was my all-time hero and role model when I was growing up. I was orphaned at an early age, and hoops was my refuge and salvation. Every kid who carried around a basketball in Huber Heights wanted to be like Doug Curry. Brownlee, Staley, Trimble, Frank... every last one of us.
