Mr. Douglas Alonza Dow Sr. was called home on Wednesday, June 15, 2023 at the blessed age of 91, at Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville, MD.  He was a dedicated member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.  He was born October 2, 1931 in Roanoke, VA and attended Roanoke City Public  Schools, where he graduated the Class of 1950 from Lucy Addison High School.  He furthered his education at Central State University in Wilberforce, OH, until he was drafted by the United States Army and had to serve 2 years in the Korean Conflict.  He worked in many fields with the U.S. Government and various military institutions.  He moved back to Roanoke, VA many years later, where he was employed with General Electric for 19 years, and finally retiring from the United States Postal Service after working there for 30 years.


He was married to Emma Pearl Braxton Dow for 42 years.  Together they have one daughter, Maurita Annette Dow Massey of Germantown, MD, two grandchildren, Booker Massey, III and Maya Anissa Massey. He also had two sons from a previous marriage, Clinton O. Dow of Las Vegas, NV, four grandchildren (Bryant, Corina, Leeloo and Lailah) and Douglas A. Dow, Jr. (who preceded him in death) and four grandchildren, (Myka, Elizabeth, Douglas, III and Paige).  Two brothers and a sister, preceded him in death, James F. Dow (Melva), Charles Dow (Inez) and Dorothy Stevenson (Arthur).  He is also survived by one brother-in-law, Grover Logan (Carolyn), and five siters-in-law, Deborah Stewart (Matt), Martha Lou Biggs (Venor), Serita Singleton (Arthur), Anne Johnson and Gertrude Freeman (Richard), four brothers-in-law, preceded him in death; Adrean Logan, Fred Logan, George Logan and Henry Logan.


A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 1, 2023, 12:00Noon at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 502 Gilmer Ave., NW, Roanoke. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Friends may visit at Serenity on Friday, June 30, from 2-5PM for viewing.  Private burial in Fairview Cemetery.  Arrangements by Serenity Funeral Home and Cremation Service
