My very first trial was in front of Judge Harkin, 40 years ago. I was a new lawyer, he was a new judge. I had been asked to sit in for another attorney in our Firm, on a case that the client had long ago abandoned. So, I didn't know anything about the case, or trial practice for that matter. I enjoyed practicing law in front of Judge Harkin for almost 30 years. He was so highly respected and appreciated. I remember other judges going to him for advice. We also enjoyed his personality. I remember one day one of my colleagues realized it was his birthday. She handed out sheets of papers to all of us in the front row which read "Happy birthday". He blinked a moment, but refused to react. At least I remember we liked him enough to tease him. But I really enjoyed him...
