I just learned of Mr. MacLean's departure when trying to reconnect as the editor of a publication called FinOps Report. I had the privilege of working on articles with Mr MacLean while an editor at a previous firm. He was always so detailed and helpful. I cannot express how saddened I am by his loss. My deepest condolences to his family, friends and other loved ones. Chris Kentouris in New York

As I think of the passing of my first true friend I am saddened. Doug was a great person. I met Douglas in kindergarten. He was a good friend and very smart. I remember him playing the sax in a grade school talent show. We had some good laughs but most important we shared memories. Although years past we did not talk or communicate I will forever remember my first friend in Danvers and the scholar who led by example and stayed humble throughout his life. Peace be with your family my friend. Alligator shirts forever. We wore them before they were cool!

My sincere condolences to the MacLean family. I just recently learned of Doug's passing. Doug and I were classmates in law school, and Doug was one of my favorite people in law school. Doug was such a positive person and made my time there all the more enjoyable. He was passionate about running marathons and would relay his stories of the training and details of the runs themselves, and I always wondered why he put himself through the rigors of the marathon when he could barely walk around for a few days after each race was over...but he loved doing it. He was a solid, fun-loving guy that I will miss.

Dear McLean family., I was so deeply saddened to hear today of Doug's passing. The last conversation I had with him was after the birth of the twins and he told me how happy he was and what a wonderful wife and children he had and how much joy he had discovered with all of you. He was such a wonderful friend to me in New York City and I will be forever grateful that he was in my life. It is impossible to comprehend your loss and I hope that you are all doing as well as you can. My most sincere condolences. Sincerely, Kate Hazelwood

I was a client of Doug's for the past 3 years and had some wonderful conversations with him over that time. He and I probably spent as much time joking as we did discussing legal opinions. I was planning on seeing him this spring and am crestfallen to hear the news. His memory will forever live with me and please accept my deepest condolences.

Doug brought energy to everyone who ever met him. Some of my most memorable moments from Harvard--and many of the years following college--were enlivened by Doug's quick laugh and enthusiasm for cheerful, unforgettable action. From Harvard Entrepreneurs (and his t-shirt empire) to his days running Armor (and his sellout seminars), Doug was birthed with a founder's spirit and a restlessness for creating value. He will inspire me forever.

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Maclean family, especially to Malcolm IV. I knew Doug at St John's and at Harvard, where he always had a friendly smile moving quickly about campus, playing basketball at the MAC, and giving everything he had to all his activities and endeavors. Thoughts and prayers for his loved ones and many friends. Rest in peace, Doug.

Doug was an early supporter of our work at Phoenix Charter Academy in Chelsea and supported us in many ways. We were deeply saddened to hear this news and cannot imagine the pain you are in right now. I loved how he was able to embrace and celebrate the accomplishments of the students in our school. He was a really amazing person and I am grateful to him. We are all thinking of you.

Dear MacLean Family
I echo many of the sentiments I have been reading all week on this amazing tribute. The "Go-giver" book and principles, Doug's capacity to truly listen, his awesome sense of humor and the support he provided to so many. He was certainly one of the very few people who could get me to meet him at a 6:45 am workout at Barry's.... I recall trying to regulate my breathing on a treadmill while he joked and talked through the entire workout !
May Doug's family find strength and comfort in their memories and I pray God's love will carry you through this difficult time.
Swim, bike, run, and soar my friend until we meet again.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Doug's passing. I met Doug at Cornell Law School and remember him as a really nice guy. If I remember correctly, he was one year ahead and not in the same classes, but I met him when he auctioned off a home-cooked dinner that my friend bid on (and won). During dinner we learned that he truly enjoyed cooking- and his mother had authored a cookbook- I think he showed it to us or said she was working on it, not sure. Such an interesting person - and likable. Whenever I saw Doug he'd be smiling. In 2002 I moved to Boston and randomly ran into Doug running along the Charles River- and this happened at least a few more times- he was always running of course! One year I watched the Boston Marathon and saw him wearing his bunny ears....quickly said congratulations to him afterwards. Always so nice to see him and though we didn't necessarily hang out I generally knew what he was up to - jobs, marriage, kids. I thinkI saw him once again while he was living in Salem. So when I heard the news -- it has been hard to digest. What an amazingly driven person who accomplished so much. My thoughts are with his loved ones especially his wife and children. I am so sorry for your loss - all who knew Doug at Cornell were fond of him, I can speak for so many who probably won't sign this guestbook but feel the same sorrow, disbelief and admiration for the person he was.

I am so profoundly sad to hear about the passing of Doug. I had the good fortune to meet Doug and his wife Hadley at the YMCA. Little did I know when I met him, that my husband had attended St. John's Prep with Doug and his brother Malcolm. Doug lit up a room with his smile and infectious spirit. He always left me hysterically laughing whether it was a story about his children, the latest episode of "The Biggest Loser", or stories of my husband in high school. I will miss the fist pump he always greeted me with whenever he saw me. Hopefully he's in heaven working on his exercise routine, and looking down at all the love that is coming his way. Hadley, please know that you and the children are in our thoughts and prayers.

My deepest condolences to your family.
Doug and I met as summer associates at Latham & Watkins in NYC and worked there together for a number of years thereafter in the corporate group. Our offices were close by, so I have a lot of great memories during work and after hours. We kept in touch from time to time after we left, and it was always great to catch up.
Doug was one of the nicest guys around. He had a special ability to bring out the best in any situation, to look on the bright side of things. He worked hard, but most importantly enjoyed life. He will be missed by many.

Dear Hadley & Family,
Doug, the giant teddybear, was one of my favorite Cornell Johnson School classmates. We hung out quite a bit towards the end of business school. Most people have some level of compassion. But Doug's love for humanity was extraordinary. He found fulfillment in helping those in need, whether blind runners, underprivileged children, or even colleagues. He spread love wherever he went and wanted his friends and family to be genuinely happy.
Doug's curiosity was insatiable. Intellectually, Doug was in a league of his own. He could handle three times the workload as his peers. A few classmates even caught him running on the treadmill while reading his law books in preparation for his two bar exams (both NY and Boston) and another marathon. Or was it the Ironman? It was hard to keep track of the next goal Doug was striving for. Yet somehow, he always found time to look you in the eye and check in about whatever was the latest in your life. You knew he cared. A lot.
Doug also could be funny and quirky, often marching to the beat of his own drum. One time, he complained that his stomach always hurt after eating oatmeal. I thought that was odd for such a healthy meal and probed further. He then showed me this massive bowl he would fill to the brim. This easily could have been a horse's breakfast!?! Mystery solved.
Doug's adoring spirit will forever be remembered and celebrated. May we all keep a little piece of Doug in our hearts.
Much love and my sincerest condolences,
Jean

Dear Hadley and family,
"But thou hast fully known my teaching, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience." 2 Timonthy 3:10
I want you to know that Doug has always been in my daily prayers, part of a litany of friends I pray for. Today at mass my normal rote litany, of course was interrupted, and I prayed in a special way not only forhis soulbut for you and your beautiful family. He teaches me a number of things about life that only good friends do by example, (as St. Paul outlines in a letter to his friend St. Timothy.)
I met Doug for the first time over lunch at the Johnson school in 1998, and over the course of the conversation we each discussed how we both planned to do an full ironman triathlon within a year as part of our bucket list. I soon learned at the Cornell pool that he literally could not swim to save his life, as he was grabbing onto the lane lines to prevent himself from sinking, while many of his classmates, cheered and gave him some lessons. That is what I learned from Doug more than anyone else - to take the bull of life by the horns - and set no challenge to big, putting ego aside and setting big goals. Less than one year later at the business school I remember a good part of the school tracking his progress on the 2.4 mile open water swim, and for the rest of the race on the internet as he raised money for diabetes. I will never forget his hilarious race recap, speaking not only of his accomplishment, but also his follies in a truly uplifting and humble way. He finished that day an ironman, but we all knew him then as an iron clad friend, who taught us many things by the way he lived this life.
Running the Boston Marathon a few times with Doug I will always remember the experience running in the sea of runners how easy it was to keep track of him - where it was very easy to loose a running buddy. But he wasmore than a running buddy - he was a running bunny. If he was a little behind me, I would know, as I would hear "go bunny," "yea bunny", etc, for miles on end and know that he was close. If he was ahead of me I could always look to the flopping bunny ears on his 6'4" frame to know where he was. In the later marathons Doug'slevel of fitness and training surpassed mineand inevitably I would have to say, despite his protests, to go aheadto the bunny, and meet him at the finish.
He andhis family will always be in my daily prayers, each mile by mile until I meet him at the finish; and I expect him to meet me, God willing, with ears flapping and a big wide smile on his bunny face, in a better place.
"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. " - 2 Timothy 4:10

All of my love, thoughts and prayers are with Hadley, their beautiful children and his family and friends.
