To my nephew, Alex and niece, Yvonne, I'm truly sorry for the loss of your father. I've been thinking of Doug since hearing the news, bringing up lots of memories of him. He was somewhat of a hero to me when I was a barely a teenager. I was in awe of his shrapnel wounds, thinking how brave he must have been. I wondered if I could be as brave as he was.
