DOUG WAS THE GEORGE PATTON OF CRITIQUE GROUPS. HE RAN THE GROUP ON TIME, ALLOWING EQUAL TIME FOR EACH CRITIQUE. THROUGH HIS GROUP, I MET PAUL (A BRILLIANT MAN WHO MADE SUGGESTIONS I STILL USE) AND GREG (ANOTHER BRILLIANT WRITER I LATER HIRED AS EDITOR). PAUL MENTIONED HOW KNOWLEDGEABLE GREG WAS, BUT HE DOUBTED GRET HAD TIME TO ADD OUR GROUP. GREG CAME ONCE AND WAS SO IMPRESSED BY HOW DOUG RAN HIS GROUP THAT HE RETURNED AND BECAME THE MOST VALUABLE MEMBER. I STILL MISS DOUG, HE TAUGHT ALL OF...

Aloha Spaulding famiy. I am very, very sorry for your loss. Douglas Spaulding was the brother of my grandpa Frank Spaulding. Grandpa didn't talk about his family very much and I wish he had because after reading this beautiful obituary I feel extremely proud to be related to such an incredible man. I have many fond memories of Mr. Spaulding. He always knew what was going on even though we thought he didn't. I will always remember him with much respect. My deepest condolences.

Among my pass-times was Troublemaker Second Class, and Pest First Class, and on one occasion appeared on the radar of the Powers That Be so much so that I was "rounded up" and brought to the Assistant Principal (Mr. Spaulding)'s office and told to wait. Wait I did. I waited and wondered what was that...

I first met Doug in 1962 when I was a principal in the Yokota area. There was no question at that time and years after that Doug was a devoted and talented educator. Glynn H. Turquand

For over twenty years I was privileged to be a member of Doug's fiction critique group. To walk into his house was to walk into a museum:paintings, sculpture, Japanese characters on the walls. The difference in this museum was that the docent was also the artist.
Because he was so business-like about giving everyone an opportunity to
read and to be critiqued, we called him General Patton. But this general selected the best of teas, let them steep the optimum time. Then, with...
