Not sure what to say?

He used to swim cycle and run every morning at Evander with us and our mini triathlon team when I was a student there. He taught me about myself and potential and really sharpened up my swimming skills. There was no swim no run no cycle that we could not conquer under his coaching I love his spirit and his attitude and I just found out about his passing this saddens me tho.. but RIP coach, u were one in a million that actually knew how to coach and taught me the science of it as well.. R.I.P.

Please accept our deepest sympathies.

I was just informed of Doug's passing by a friend. This is shocking news! I can credit Doug with teaching me to swim as an adult (age 33) when I could barely freestyle 20 yds in the Columbia Prep pool. Much of what I learned from Doug in those private lessons is what I teach today in my triathlon coaching business.

I last saw Doug in March 2002 when he did a swimming clinic for my club in Salt Lake City.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Lynn and all Doug's children. I know...

Doug Stern was my swimming coach at Evander Childs. I was Co-captian of the team in 1970. Words cannot express how he influenced my life. I owe a great deal of my never give up attitude to Doug. I remember having to swim 60 fifty yard dashes on the minute at Saint Mary's. Without me knowing the other coach bet Doug I would not finish. Doug knew I would not give up. When I completed them he told me about the bet. To this day whenever I have an obstacle I say to myself 60 fity's on the minute....

Doug Stern was one of the most alivest men I ever met. I cannot even imagine a new york without him. He was a dear friend, mentor, coach, and support to me for the last several years and I miss him deeply already. My love to his family.

I had been sadly informed by a friend about the passing of Doug Stern. I could never imagine that such a fierce, energetic, and youthful being would leave our earth......

It's so sad to see such a positive life (light) force extinguished. He helped so many people. He will surely be missed but never forgotten. I was proud to be his cousin. G-d Speed.

I met Doug and his wife Lynn working out for the NYC Marathon in 1978. We have been very close since. I have shared much joy with them over these years, and have watched us grow older together and their children just grow. I will miss Doug terribly.
