WILLIAMSBURG — Douglas George Stites, 89, of Williamsburg, died on Monday, March 10, 2008, at Tendercare of Traverse City.

Douglas was born in Detroit, the son of George A. and Margaret (Taylor) Stites. He married Leona Mae "Peg" Comrie on Dec. 1, 1941, in Detroit.

Douglas was a Licensed Practical Nurse at Traverse City State Hospital for 31 years. He was also a cherry farmer, bus driver and custodian for the Yuba School.

He enjoyed cribbage, checkers and baseball, and played the guitar and sang when he was younger.

Douglas is survived by his son, Douglas George "Pete" (Sharon) Stites Jr.; his daughter, Patricia Ann (Dale) Hesley; four grandsons, Daniel W. (Linda) Jennings, Douglas M. Jennings, Jeffery P. Jennings and Gary T. Jennings; two granddaughters, Tina M. (Vernon) LaLone and Sandy L. (Jeff) Send; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leona Mae "Peg" Stites; and his brother, Nelson Stites.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at 2 p.m., with visitation one hour prior. The Rev Louis Grettenberger will officiate.

Memorials may be directed in Douglas' name to the Alzheimer's Association.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home, Traverse City.
