As a long time participant in the hi-tech industry I always looked up to the leadership of pioneers like Doug Strain and Howard Vollum. Their contributions to the industry and the community overall will sorely be missed. Doug's leadership in so many ways were an inspiration to many of us who were trying to make a positive impact.

Doug was especially helpful and kind to us when we were looking for a permanent home for the Linus Pauling Institute in the early 1990s. He was eager for the Institute to move from California to Oregon and introduced us to key people at several Portland area institutions. He deeply admired Linus Pauling and whole-heartedly supported our efforts to recognize Pauling in Portland and elsewhere in Oregon. Our condolences to Cleo, James and Barbara and family for the loss of their husband and father. Rick and Annemarie Frazee met Doug at the Memorial for our mutual good friend, Jack Burraston. We attended Doug's 80th birthday party. Doug was a very gracious and special gentleman. We met Barbara at the Olympic Gym in Gresham and also hiked with her and a group from the gym (ken was the leader of the hike).
