Douglas Varchol

It was a year ago that Doug left us, forever leaving an emptiness in our hearts and souls. However his friendship, wisdom, and body of work through film, documentaries, and testimonies will forever be the legacy he leaves behind for posterity, testifying to his deep love and insight of how human and nature should live in harmony. For me, Doug will remain special and continues to live in my heart and mind forever. Doug, you may not be here with us, your spirit lives on.

I will always hold Doug deep in my heart and soul for his friendship, loyalty, and deep sense of justice to document the story of the enforced disappearance of my husband, Sombath Somphone. It's the hallmark of Doug's life - sensitively narrating stories of people's lives and making sense of how these are impacted and caught in the web of intricate relations with the social, the political, and the natural environment of their existence. In so doing, he turns the personal into the universal....
