Not sure what to say?

Douglas was a wonderful supporter during the early days when I was trying to pull the Leslie Howard & Flight 777 documentaries together. He was always willing to share his knowledge on the subject of Iberia and Leslie's time there in 1943. I treasure the time I spent with Doug, first on that long, long day back in Sept 2007 when he was so patient as I asked question after question (see pic below) - in what became the longest interview I've ever filmed. And then a year or so later (if memory...

I met Doug in October, 1963 at fort Benning GA. We were a group of about 30 young Army Officers selected to serve in counterintelligence. From there we went on to Ft. Holabird in Baltimore for our advanced training, parting in May 1964. This was a remarkable group, mostly Ivy League, with 2 PhDs, several lawyers, and one Rhodes Scholar. I came from a small Southern college and was in awe of Doug's intellect as well as his credentials. He was also a nice guy. The group did well in life...

I only met Doug in 2007, when we began working together on a project in which he had a huge depth of knowledge, the disappearance of Flight 777. That is still not quite complete but will eventually see the light of day. However more than a collaborator, Doug was a gentleman and a true friend whose emails and wise advice always brightened my day. Rest in peace.

A kind, patient man with an incredible memory and a deep love of Portugal. He introduced me to the love of books and, above all, to the craft of bookbinding. Not a year passed over 60 years of friendship that we did not write or see each other or, occasionally, our families. Rest in peace, Doug, our friendship will last for sometime yet. Tony Wessely

Doug was a highly respected member of the 1955 Class at St Louis Country Day. Clearly, he lived a rich full life. Deepest sympathy to his family. Rest In Peace.
