Andrews Mortuary and Crematory - Market Street Chapel - Wilmington Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Lee Sherman, beloved husband, brother and friend. Bob was 79 and passed away peacefully at his home in Hampstead, North Carolina on February 7, 2025.

Born in Tacoma, Washington on October 11, 1945, Bob was a proud graduate of the University of Washington, where he earned his undergraduate degree and Doctorate in Dentistry in 1970. Shortly thereafter, he was commissioned into the United States Navy, where he served with distinction in various locations, including California, Southeast Asia, Washington D.C., Japan, and finally with the Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he retired in 1989.

Dr. Sherman completed his residency in Endodontics at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in 1979 and went on to become Board Certified in 1985. After retiring from the Navy, he dedicated his career to serving the Jacksonville, NC community as an endodontist for 36 years. He was a passionate advocate for organized dentistry and served in leadership roles with the Onslow County Dental Society and the North Carolina Endodontic Society. Bob was also a lifetime member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Endodontics, and the Southern Endodontic Study Group, and was inducted into prestigious organizations including the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Cosmos Society of Washington D.C. He was honored as an honorary alumnus of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1997.

Those who knew Bob, knew his enthusiastic attitude toward life, his kindness, his laughter and his caring spirit.  A man of many passions, Bob loved learning and was always eager to meet new people. He enjoyed traveling the world, shopping for unique treasures, caring for his many dogs throughout the years and sharing his joy with those around him. He had a deep appreciation for life’s little moments, which he cherished with his loving wife, Lucy Dadourian Sherman, who stood by his side for 49 years.

Bob’s legacy will live on through his family, friends, colleagues, and patients. He is survived by his wife, Lucy, and many extended family members, all of whom will miss his warmth, wit, and unwavering kindness.

The Funeral Service is scheduled for 2:00 PM Sunday, February 16,2025, at Andrews Market Street Chapel, 1617 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.

Not sure what to say?

I was in total shock to hear of the passing of a dear friend Dr. Sherman. I was Dr. Sherman’s dental assistant in the Navy on Active Duty. Dr. Sherman instilled the love of Endodontics and shared a world of knowledge with me. He believed in me so much and encouraged me to follow my dreams of being a teacher. We both retired in Jax NC and was always bragging about me to his co workers about how proud he was of me for
Becoming a teacher. The best Endodontic toast in the world. He could do...

Dear Lucy,
It is with a saddened heart that we learned of the untimely loss of your dear husband. We first met you and Bob 35 years ago when you both became involved with the Tar Heel Endodontic Association; Southern Endo; and American Association of Endodontists. You both hosted receptions in your beautiful home for our dental gatherings. We continue to surround you with our love and prayers, and we are blessed with your friendship. May God continue to guide you on your journey in...

May your cherished memories ease your pain.
With love, peggy and steve

Dr Sherman and Lucy have been a special part of my life for 15 years. I would see him every week without fail. We poured over maps and itineraries, and talked about everything from history, to geography, to art and music. It was a privelage to call him my dear friend. No one knew how live life to the fullest like he did. I will miss you so much. Prayers for Lucy and their family.

Bob was a wonderful example of someone who gave his all. We are blessed to have known him.

We are shocked and saddened at the news of Bob's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lucy and the Sherman family. We met Lucy and Bob through our Japan Ikebana Group in Wilmington NC. We lived in Japan at a different time and enjoyed sharing memories about each other's travels. Bob's smile, warmth and kindness will be dearly missed.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

I have known Bob for many years as a fellow NC endodontist. My wife Carol and I have long considered him and Lucy to be among our favorite friends in the dental profession, and we are so sorry to hear of his passage. He will indeed be greatly missed.
