DOHERTY FUNERAL SERVICE Obituary

Dr. Benjamin Quong Moy passed away very peacefully on January 20, 2017 at Massachusetts General Hospital at the age of almost 95, from pneumonia, with his wife Betty and daughter Marilee at his side.

Dr. Moy was born and raised in Fall River, MA and was fortunate to be able to attend a renowned private school, Ling Nam, in Guangzhou, China during his teenage years.

After returning home from China and before entering the University of Michigan, he enjoyed working in a well known family owned restaurant, The Eagle, in Fall River which, at the time, attracted customers from as far away as Boston, for its food and entertainment.  During this period, Dr. Moy was drawn to become a lifetime gastronomist.

While attending the University of Michigan, he was drafted into WWII.  He served as a US Army engineer in the UK, Wales, France and Germany.  The Battle of the Bulge was such an impressionable experience for him that he maintained close contact with his fellow soldiers for the rest of his life. He attended Battle of the Bulge reunions around the country.

Upon completion of his service, Dr. Moy returned home, and graduated from Boston University and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.  He did a residency at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City where he met and married Dr. Yung Sook Son, who was working on her residency in medicine.  Daughter Marilee was later born in Boston.

As a child, Marilee’s fondest memories of her father include travels throughout the US, playing tennis, attending concerts and musicals, and of course, enjoying a variety of gourmet foods and the art of fine dining.

Dr. Moy later married Elizabeth (Betty) Bullock who was a fashion buyer for the couture department at the former Filene’s Department Store.  She later joined Dr. Moy as an Office Manager and became indispensible in the practice for 40 years.

They both shared a love of international travel, gastronomic adventures, tennis, jazz, late nights and laughter.

Dr. Moy is survived by his devoted wife Betty of 47 years; daughter, Marilee, husband, Wayne Thompson and grandchildren Hunter and Ava; stepdaughter Dr. Susan Ryu, husband Dr. Michael Gaynon of Palo Alto, CA and daughters Dr. Lisa Gaynon and her husband Dr. Andrea Germiniasi of San Francisco, CA and Laura Lindquist and her husband Dr. Robert Lindquist of San Francisco, CA; brother Frank Moy (deceased), sons Frank Moy, Jr., his wife Jane, of Walpole and children Meaghan Moy of Dedham, Ben Moy and wife Christine of Canton, Frank Moy and wife  Dr. Theresa Moy and son Henry of Newburgh, NY; Dr. Stephen Moy and wife Caryn of Dublin, CA and daughter Prezleigh of Glendale CA; and Jeffrey Moy and wife Dr. Jaime Wong of Milton; sisters Helen Chick of New Jersey; Rosemary Grey and husband Paul of LA, CA; Sammee Quong Charles of Augusta, ME, daughter Kimberly Charles of Austin, TX and son Nicholas Charles and wife Allison of Brunswick, ME.

Dr. Moy practiced dentistry in Somerville for 60 years.  A lifelong learner, Dr. Moy tremendously enjoyed attending dental seminars and courses to learn the latest dental techniques, products and equipment, and he would incorporate his newfound knowledge into his practice.

Dr. Moy was a passionate gastronomist, and was an avid tennis player for many years. He also enjoyed WWII history, reading, music, travel, photography, acquiring new gadgets and watching professional and college sports teams.

Dr. Moy held lifetime memberships with the American Dental Association, the Massachusetts Dental Society, the Middlesex Dental Society and the Academy of General Dentistry.

Services will be private. In his memory, donations may be made to the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine Scholarship Fund.

Not sure what to say?

It is hard to believe Ben has passed away. I will miss his friendly smile, his hearty laughter, and sharp intellect. While we are all sad to see him go, it is comforting to know that he had a wonderful, long life with a very loving and devoted wife, Betty. We still remember with much gratitude how Ben and Betty came to see our wedding ceremony and made sure we had a beautiful wedding reception, without anyone knowing about their presence.
He had many Blessings in his life,...

I was very saddened to hear that Uncle Ben had passed away. I will truly miss his bright smile, infectious laugh and his quick wit. I have fond childhood memories of visiting Uncle Ben's dental office where he would graciously take care of my 2 brothers and me after his regular business hours. Afterwards Uncle Ben, my Dad and the 3 of us would enjoy a feast in Chinatown. Dentistry is a very challenging profession demanding meticulous skill and patience. Having had the opportunity to observe...

It's been two weeks and I really miss Dad. Betty gave me a large envelope of letters to/from Dad and me - I was in the 7-9 year old range. It really struck me how I was truly Daddy's little girl then...I just hadn't thought about that for years. Love you, Dad!

I hardly knew my Uncle Ben in my adulthood but as a child I remember his as warm, generous, and very welcoming. I'm very happy that he lived a long and healthy life, and that he was surrounded by love when he passed. Sending warmest wishes to Aunt Betty and Marilee.
