Dr. Eugene R. Odou
Dr. Eugene Richard Odou, M.D., 89, of Montebello, California, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, June 24, 2013 from natural causes.
Dr. Gene was born in Hettinger, North Dakota, on April 29, 1924. He was the second of three boys born to William D. Odou and Mathilda Hoen. The family moved to Montebello in 1936, where Dr. Odou attended and graduated from Montebello High School in 1942. He then attended Pasadena Community college and University of Southern California in 1948. He met and later married Bobbie Clark, a nurse, while in training at Los Angeles/ USC General Hospital in 1948/49. Dr. Gene found himself at the center of the Polio outbreak in Los Angeles in 1948. He was featured in an article in the Los Angeles Times.
After graduating, Dr. Odou served a residency in Fresno, California and then was called to duty in the Navy.
At the time, the Navy shared their physicians with the Marines, so Dr. Odou served in both branches. He earned his wings attending flight school in Pensacola Florida and became a flight surgeon. He was then assigned duty in the Philippines at Clark Naval Base and flew medical missions throughout the South Pacific region. Dr. Odou brought his wife and two small children, Carol and Robert, along with him. A third child, John, was born while they were stationed in the Philippines.
Upon his return from duty, Dr. Gene, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, and his brother, Dr. Bruce L. Odou, general surgery, opened their office - known as the Odou Medical Group, across the street from Beverly Hospital in 1957. Dr. Bruce lost his fight with colon cancer in 2006. Dr. Gene continued practicing medicine up until just last August. Dr. Odou limited his work to assisting and giving physicals at the office and Beverly Hospital over the last few years. Beverly Hospital had documented over 8,000 babies delivered by Dr. Gene.
Dr. Gene stayed busy flying airplanes, playing tennis and golf, and traveling. Over the years, he and his wife traveled extensively throughout Mexico and Central America, Europe and Asia.
He and his brother Bruce flew several mercy missions into Latin American countries bringing patients into Montebello to perform lifesaving surgeries at their own expense.
He loved to go on fishing trips to San Felipe, Mexico with friends and family.
Dr. Gene served as Chief of Staff for the Los Angeles County medical association and several terms as Chief of Staff at Beverly Hospital.
He and Bobbie were actively involved with the Montebello Sister City Association and Ashiya, Japan, hosting many student ambassadors over the years.
He also organized many fund raising activities. He regularly supported Salerni Colligium and Beverly Hospital among many others.
Dr. Gene is survived by his loving wife for 65 years, Bobbie, twelve grandchildren, sons Robert (Diane) Temecula, Ca., John (Jana) San Diego, Ca.
and Joel (Kellie), and daughter Kathleen, Montebello, Ca., and other family and friends.
Dr. Gene is preceded in death by his parents, brothers +Jim(Shirley) and +Bruce(Shirley) and his first child, +Carol(Bill).

Not sure what to say?

Dear Odou Family,

I had to pull my birth certificate out and saw Dr. Gene’s name on my birth certificate. He was a blessing to me also in my youth. What a caring, loving person. He is dear to my heart. I pray you and your family are still being comforted and reminded of all the cherished memories. God Bless.

Dear Bobbie and family: I'm sorry to be signing this so late. I just found this on the internet and wanted to offer my sympathies to you all. I remember so many fun visits at your home and at the local Montebello swimming pool with all of us. Please know how much my family cared about all of you! Loving best, Bobbie Jane Jenke (Bobbie's namesake)

Dear Bobbie and family,
I was so saddened to find out just today when trying to find an email for you that Dr. Odou had gone to his eternal reward in heaven. As you know Carol was my best childhood friend and all of you were the very best next door neighbors one could have. So many treasured memories. I thank God that somehow you came to my dad's service in Feb 2007. Our mom passed after so many years suffering Jan.31, 2013. I just retired from work and would love to see you. Please...

I am so sorry to hear Gene has pasted. Gene and Bobbi has been so special to so many people, family and others. They have touched ours lives in many ways.

Dr. Gene was my mother's cousin. I remember meeting him years ago when he and Bobbi visited Washington DC. He told us about the Odou family in St. Onge. We had a wonderful visit and learned a lot about the family. Our deepest sympathy to Bobbi and the family. We are fortunate to be relatives even if we are distant relatives.

My condolences to the Odou family. Dr. Gene delivered my one and only child 30 yrs ago. I will always be grateful to him since it took me 5 yrs to conceive. He called by little boy a miracle baby. I will be forever grateful to him. Rest in peace Dr. Odou.

Cousin Gene, of the wonderfully talented Odou clan, was an energetic voice of light, humor and wisdom. He was always quick with support and praise, eager to keep extended family close and feeling loved. I will miss his physical being, but when I close my eyes - It is easy to hear his laugh and feel his presence. God Bless his gentle soul and bring comfort to his family and dear ones.

Dr. Gene delivered the first of our four daughters (1959) Dr. Bruce the other 3 ('61-'65) Whenever I was in Dr Gene's office he would always ask "What would you like to talk about today?" In other words what is on your mind that you would like to talk about. Imagine that. Thank you to the entire Odou family for your dedication and service. Don and Emma Lee

Fond remembrances of the Odou family and their home I was priveleged to know as Carol was my best friend thru Junior and Senior High years in Montbello. Deepest condolences, Lorna Teske Ariondo
