Dr. John Herbert Boyd
Dr. John Herbert Boyd, 86, died suddenly at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, February 16, 2016.
Dr. Boyd was born October 22, 1929, in Andrews, S.C., the youngest child of the late Thomas Lee Boyd, Sr and Bluhma Loryea Boyd. He graduated from Andrews High School and from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston with highest honors. He worked as a pharmacist for 65 years, having retired from both Eckerd Drugs and Marion County Memorial Hospital. Currently he worked part-time at Mullins Discount Drug and Central Pharmacy in Lake View.
Dr. Boyd was active in church and community pursuits. He had served faithfully for years at Mullins First Baptist Church as a Deacon, Brotherhood director, Royal Ambassadors leader, Sunday School teacher and Church Training teacher. He was currently a member of the Men's Bible Class and Brotherhood.
Dr. Boyd was a US Air Force veteran, having served active duty during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel.
He had been an active member of the American Legion, VFW, and Rotary Club and was a dedicated Mason. Additionally, he trained and served as a hospice volunteer at McLeod's in Florence.
Dr. Boyd was an exceptional man--a loving husband, a loyal and caring daddy, an adoring grandpa, and a faithful friend. As a Christian, he was devoted, and as a pharmacist he was tirelessly professional.
Dr. Boyd is survived by his daughter, Sharon Lynette Boyd of Brittons Neck; by his two beloved grandsons, Matthew Benjamin Lancaster of Clemson University and Jonathan Thomas Lancaster of Brittons Neck; a Sister, Marguerite Boyd Taylor of Georgetown; a Brother, Thomas Lee Boyd, Jr. of Salters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased in addition to his parents, by his beloved wife of 53 years, Floretta Richardson Boyd; their son, Timothy Martin Boyd; five brothers, Issac Boyd, James Boyd, Alton Boyd, Loryea Boyd, and Kenneth Boyd; and two sisters, Bluhma Boyd Mims and Willa Boyd Marshall.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 19, at 2:00 P.M. In the sanctuary of Mullins First Baptist Church, with Rev. Jim Kirkland and Rev. Chadwick Ivester officiating. Burial will follow at Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery in Brittons Neck, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
