Vensil & Chute Funeral Homes - Newark Obituary

Dr. Joseph Saul Stein, DO, age 74, passed peacefully Sunday, April 25, 2021.

Joseph was a kind, gentle man with a giving heart and great sense of humor.

He was fortunate to be born to, Louis and Jeanette (Socket) Stein in Philadelphia, PA.

He was a born healer and spent his life caring for others. A graduate of Upper Iowa University with a BS, a Graduate of Michigan State University receiving a degree as Doctor of Osteopathy. He completed a residency in pediatrics from the University of Connecticut and was Board Certified in Emergency Medicine.  He practiced medicine for over 35 years. He volunteered his skills at many Ohio events, was often on the radio answering medical questions as well as TV and in the local newspapers.  He loved teaching and offered his knowledge many times to interns and residents over his career.  He was very approachable and even in his last months would talk with anyone to explain medical questions.

He loved to ski, run, travel, listen to all types of music, walk his puppies and even tried to walk his cat.  He read daily and in his retirement he studied something new every day.  He loved golfing, having dinner with friends and enjoying the company of family, friends and neighbors.  In his last years his greatest joy was having dinner at home and watching a beautiful movie with his wife and talking to family.

Above all he loved being with his wife and family which included his loving wife of 33 plus years,  Barbara (Hamme) Stein; his loving son, Jacob Stein; his loving daughter, Jessica (Stein) Taylor and son in law, James Taylor and granddaugter, Madison Taylor; daughter, Julie (Stein) Wilder, daughter, Jillian and (Ava) Stein; sister, Carol (Stein) Sokolow, Bill Wexler; brother in law, the late Gene Sokolow; brother in law,  Gary and Bonnie Hamme and family, brother in law,  Gregory and Kim Hamme and family, brother in law,  the late Patrick Hamme; loving mother in law,  the late Josephine Hamme; the Condray-Raderstorf Family including nephew Keith and Godson, David; his much loved and admired uncle, Richard and aunt Bernice Socket; his late aunt and uncle , Beatrice (Socket) and Stanley Reinish; all his cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and his late uncle Harry Stein DO, Joe’s much admired uncle; and wonderful friends, neighbors and colleagues.

Not sure what to say?

So sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Stein...I worked with him in the ER at St. Anthony. He was such a kind, compassionate physician and a pleasure to work with. My condolences to the family.

I worked with Dr Stein for a short time at the old St Anthony's Hospital ER. I remember that he was so calm and kind. That wasn't always the case in an ER setting and set him apart. I'm sad to hear of his passing. The world today needs more people like him. My sympathy to his family, Diane Lowe

Joe was my idol, always calm, decisive, and seemingly... always right!
His compassion and and dedication were exemplary!
What a fine doctor and person!

What a good doc. we used to always laugh about his socks in er

My Daddy was a wonderful man, physician, father, and husband. He was especially talented at taking care of others and gave the gift of knowledge to those whom he was in contact with. I love him dearly and will miss him forever. He inspired me to learn and be a responsible human. He loved to laugh and had a great sense of humor. I will forever cherish my memories with him. Love you, Dad.

A beautiful tribute to a wonderful man. Love you Uncle Joe.

Thank you for always treating me like your own. You were a great father and a great grandfather. It was an honor to call you Zeyda.
