Dr. Venkat Kondragunta Rao passed away on June 3rd, 2023 surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born on August 5th, 1951 in Chintagumpala, India. He graduated from medical school in 1974 and immigrated to the United States in 1976. He trained in Internal Medicine with specialties in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine and has called mid-Michigan home since 1992.


His kindness was an instantly recognizable feature of his personality, leading him to live a life committed to family, devoted to service, and helping others. He volunteered much of his time to serving on medical boards and committees at the local, state, and national level. He dedicated many years to the International Medical Graduate Section of the AMA. At the time of his passing, he was the Chair of the Board of Medicine for the state of Michigan, the Chair of Internal Medicine at McLaren Flint, a member of the Board for the Genesee County Medical Society, and a member of the board for the Foundation for Mott Community College.


He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rama, daughter Hima (Andrew), son Bharat (Deepika), grandsons Naveen and Sachin, mother Mahalakshmamma, sister Venkataseshamma (Subbarao), brother Butchaiah (Sakuntala), brother Suresh (Sujata), brother Visweswararao (Sunitha), a large extended family, and a close network of lifelong friends. He will be greatly missed.


Visitation  2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint.

My sincere condolences to your family on the passing of "Dr. Rao". I have known him for many years and we had a collaborative relationship and network of patients as I am a pulmonary physician at the University of Michigan and previously at Henry Ford. I will always remember him as a very kind, gentle and thoughtful physician; very caring of his patients. His passing was quite a surprise as I just discovered that this happened as of today.
