Dr. William Hardman, former city commissioner and mayor who delivered nearly 6,000 babies in his career of 51 years, died late Monday at Lake Wales Medical Center. A Lake Wales native, Hardman was the first medical specialist in Lake Wales, opening his practice in 1965.

Read MoreAlmost 15 years ago, I had my last appointment with Dr. Hardman. Had I known I'd never see him again, I would've 1) bawled my eyes out and 2) thanked him profusely for his kindness, humor, and care over the years. What an absolute gem of a doctor he was! Just wanted his family to know that his patients still remember him with so much appreciation and fondness.

Dr. Hardman was THE BEST doctor/OBGYN EVER. He delivered two of my sons and was hoping he could have delivered my third son in 1989, but was saddened to hear that he was in the hospital himself. He will be dearly missed and FOREVER grateful for his service.

The best Dr. Ever. I absolutely loved him. He made you feel at ease. He was very kind and caring. You felt like we're being taken care of by your father. So sorry he passed. What a great man. God bless his family. Such a loss will always be felt.

Dr. Hardman, you certainly, left your life prints all over Lake Wales, and much of Polk County. You were a "gentleman" and a very good physician. Your life...speaks for itself...It's not goodbye..for Christians...see you in heaven. I will never forget the definition of..."Vacillate."

Dr. Hardman was my doctor for almost 30 years, he was the best, always had a smile, very caring of your feelings, never rushed you thru your appointment and when looking for a new doctor after his retirement, I have realized he set the bar way too high. Dr. Hardman was a wonderful Doctor and kind person. He led a full, wonderful life and gave generously to his professional as well as the community. He will be missed by many.
