Duane Eugene Eitreim

Duane Eugene Eitreim February 28, 1941 – June 29, 2025

Duane was born February 28, 1941, in Mount Vernon, Washington to Claire and Viola Eitreim. He joined his parents and his sister Diann at their home near the Fredonia Grange. When Duane was four years old, the family moved to a 40-acre farm in Edison where they continued dairy- and crop farming. The young farmhand they hired named Glenn Plambeck became Duane’s lifelong friend.

He attended Edison Elementary school, followed by Burlington-Edison High School, graduating in 1959. In his high school years, Duane tried his hand at rodeo, where he made lots of friends and memories. Directly after high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and left for boot camp at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Before his assignment to the Transportation Division, Duane trained on the Army’s Amphibious “Duck Boats.”

A few years after returning home from the Army, Duane joined the crew constructing the Atlantic Richfield Company oil refinery in Blaine, Washington. After the refinery’s construction, Duane accepted a job as Maintenance Foreman and held other positions in his 30 years of employment.

ARCO is also where he met his future wife, Judith Tindall. After their marriage in January 1974, Judy and her children Brian and Jean moved to Duane’s farm in Edison. As a family they went fishing, crabbing, and explored Puget Sound whenever possible. Judy and Duane also travelled to Canada for new fishing adventures and enjoyed trips to Alaska, the Grand Canyon, and Mt. Rushmore.

During his 35 years as a volunteer fire fighter at the Edison Fire Department, Duane also served a term as Fire Chief. Other clubs he participated in were the Edison Sportsmen’s Club, Aerie No. 3242 F.O.E., and he helped teach firearm safety to groups of young hunters. Duane was also a member of Edison Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife Judy Eitreim; his son Brian Tindall; his parents Claire and Viola Eitreim; his sister- and brother-in-law Diann and Dave Maars; father- and mother-in-law Curtis and Virginia Grout; and brother-in-law Steve Grout.

Duane is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Jean and Patrick O’dell; brother-in-law Chris Grout; daughter-in-law Margarita Tindall; granddaughters Anne-Marie (Valerie) Hodge, Jessica (Michael) Loey, Elizabeth O’dell, and Nicole Tindall; great-grandsons Owen and Daniel Loey; nieces Kristin (Gary) Gaeta and Christina Grout; and nephews Greg (Susan) Maars, Rick Grout, Scott (Ginger) Grout, and Todd (Stephanie) Grout, as well as great-nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service at Bow cemetery is planned for 11 am on Saturday, August 9th, and a celebration of Duane’s life will take place at 1pm on Saturday August 9th at Hawthorne Funeral Home and Memorial Park reception room located at 1825 East College Way, Mt. Vernon.

The family would like to acknowledge the devoted care staff at Where the Heart is Assisted Living and Memory Care who provided loving and compassionate care for Duane in the last year of his life, as well as the nurses and support staff at Hospice of the Northwest.

In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest a donation to Hospice of the Northwest.
