Durwood Curling

Durwood was a mentor, friend, and was truly a great man. He was honest, courageous, visionary, straight-forward and he loved people. He particularly loved his fellow comrades at SPSA. I will miss him dearly. Much love to you and the kids and grandkids... Ginger

Ginger, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time. Durwood was such an amazing person -- so many great memories of him from over the years at SPSA. My heart goes out to you now and in the days ahead. Rest in peace Durwood.

From a famous writer or so I have heard..."I beg of you, do not forget me when the phenomenon of death visits me. Oh, keep my memory alive. For if you forget me, only then will I surely die." Mr. Curling could never be forgotten...his knowledge, his charm, his whit and his professionalism will always be revered and regarded. Our hearts are with the Curling family...fondly, The Hart's.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Durwood many times during his tenure as Executive Director of SPSA. When I think of the word gentleman, Durwood is always the first person to come to mind. He was one of the most professional executives I have ever had the pleasure to come in contact with. Durwood does not remember me but I remember him. When I was sent to Great Bidge from Portlock High he graduated the year that I was sent to Great Bridge. South Norfolk took over Portlock and I had to be sent to Great Bridge. Rest in peace, Durwood. Doris

Durwood Curling was one of the greatest leaders in Chesapeake's history and will be solely missed. As Director of Planning and later City Manager, he helped guide the city through it's early life. Durwood was my mentor and guided me through the early years of my life. He hired me when I was 13 years old as a summer intern in the Planning Department and found planning related summer jobs for me until I graduated with MA in Planning where I then worked in the Chesapeake Planning Department....
