Tempe Mortuary - Tempe Obituary

Dwight Edward Cahill, 74, passed away on January 6, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones. He was born January 23, 1949 in Appleton, Wisconsin, to James Edward and Evelyn Dorothy Cahill. Dwight is survived by Rebecca, his wife of 53 years, daughters Briana (Jeffery) and Whitney (David), son Wyatt (Kaja), granddaughters Abigail, Matilda, Delaney, Layla and Cami, grandsons Avery, Bennett and Hugh and his brother Dennis Cahill.

Dwight was a graduate of Tempe High School before attending Mesa Community College and continuing on to Arizona State University, where he played under Frank Kush on a football scholarship. During this time, he played in the 1970 Peach Bowl where they defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels with a 10-0 season.  He then played three years of semi-professional football for the Phoenix Blazers. In 2015 Dwight was inducted into the Tempe High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He also received recognition for his 20 Years of Service as a High School Football Official (Umpire), ending his career with an impressive 28 years.

After his football playing days were complete, he became a masonry contractor with his brothers, establishing Cahill Contracting followed by Firebird Masonry with his brother Donald Cahill.

If you were looking for Dwight, you could find him cheering on the Sun Devils, playing cards at the Q & Brew or officiating football at the local high schools.

Honoring his request there is no formal service. Memorial donations may be made to the Dravet Syndrome Foundation (https://dravetfoundation.org/donate).

Not sure what to say?

I fondly remember Dwight. He was a legend even as a junior at Tempe High. I admired Dwight. Plus he was so kind and funny. I am saddened to learn of his death. Sincerely, Cheryl Beck Hoffman, fellow Buffalo of class of 1967. Love you, Dwight. Thanks for all you did. Seems like you lived your life well. I remember you so fondly.

I am so sorry way too young great guy you will be greatly missed

Dennis and family, please accept our condolences at the passing of Dwight. Ben remembers him and his excellent athletic talents. GO Buffaloes, Thunderbirds, and Sun Devils!

You will be sorely missed my friend! My condolences

Dwight became a friend as we played football (I watched - he played) at Tempe High. The friendship grew stronger when we ran into each other through being football officials.one of the last times I saw him was at Sun Devil Stadium for Pat Tillman’s memorial. He had a kid(s) with him. Teaching him (them) there is more to life than “just football.” A man I saw grow from "being a kid,” to a man with wisdom enough to share with “kids” about the reality of life.

Thank you Dwight for the years of committing to the success of the Coach Zauner's College Senior & Free Agent Combines. You will be missed.

The Buff Family is sad - we lost a good one

Great memories with the Cahill brothers! They were always up to something FUN...
Dwight will be truly missed!
