I was in that very first Russian class in the Fall of 1959. One of my most memorable teachers. She enthusiastically embraced every phase of the education of her students. She loved to laugh and chat after class. She had me bake Russian cookies in our family pastry shop for class Christmas parties. A superb mentor! I loved Prof Shllaku!

Dr. Shllaku's influence continued to inspire me every day in the classroom for over 30 years. I shall forever be grateful for her enthusiasm and professionalism. My sincere condolences to Mara and family.

Honored to have studied Russian for three years with Dr. Shllaku at BGSU in the 60's. Not only learned the language but a lot of history as well. After 2 years of language and one year of literature, I asked her if I could survive in Moscow with my knowledge. She said as long as I didn't talk to anyone older than 7.
