A little known fact that is seldom mentioned, Lieutenant Edward Albert Heimberger was awarded the Bronze Star with V for valor during the Battle for Tarawa in1943. As the commander of a Navy assault boat, he was able to rescue 40+ Marines who were stranded under fire on the reef due to low tide! After the war, he returned to acting and dropped his last name, which had been often mispronounced!
