Edgar Morris Sneed Sr.

SNEED, Edgar Morris Sr., passed away January 2, 2009 at his home, Chimney Meadow Farm, in Ruther Glen, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester M. Sneed Sr. and Dora M. Sneed; his brother, Lester Sneed Jr.; and sister, Mary S. Voss. Edgar is survived by his wife, Patricia; son, Edgar M. Sneed Jr. (Nancy) of Columbus, Ohio; daughters, Susan Owsley (Roger) of Kettering, Ohio, Carolyn Oliver (Sam) of Springfield, Ohio, Virginia Sneed of Richmond, Va.; and stepdaughter, Alison Finlayson (Mark) of Tollesbury, England. Other survivors include eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry (Cecilia); and two sisters, Barbara Newton and Phyllis Vermilyea, all of North Carolina. Edgar was born February 17, 1922 in Baltimore, Md. He graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, N.C., and attended North Carolina State University before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a flight instructor during World War II. Following his military service, he operated the Emporia Regional Airport for four years until he accepted a position for ESSO. Upon retiring from Exxon, he raised black angus cattle, South African boer goats, and bred, trained and raced thoroughbred horses. His horses won many races at Pimlico, Delaware Park, Laurel and Charles Town, where he won the Potomac Stakes in 2003. He was a communicant of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Ashland, and a benefactor of St. Luke's Anglican Church, Manakin Sabot. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, January 6, in the Nelsen Funeral Home's Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 7, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Ashland. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the above mentioned churches.
