Edith on the High Line, Oct. 2014

My Aunt Edie was an important and beloved figure in my life for as long as I can remember. Family vacations and visits to Flemington, New Jersey, and to New York City always included spending time with her and Uncle Eddie and (after they were born) cousins Annie and Richard. I also remember in particular a trip to Washington, D.C. they took me along on I'm not sure how that happened. It was very fun and educational and included an excursion to the Velatis Caramel Company.

Adios m Amigo,, with much love,

No one knew more about classical music, opera, ballet, children's literature, how to get around NYC, and where to find accessible bathrooms in the city than my mother, Edith Friedman, did. In fact, as she grew older and forgot some of the things she knew, she still knew more than I do about what was playing on WQXR, which she listened to all day long, something she had done since before I was born. (I thought all the conductors were relatives and that Pablo Casals and George Jelinek lived...

I knew Edie for many years although only through letters, telephone and messages passed by Susan. Edie loved the theater arts, ballet, opera, music, drama and possessed vast knowledge and understanding of them. I always found her taste and judgment to be impeccable. She had the free and sensitive spirit of an Artist. I feel honored to have shared a little of her insights and charm and i will miss both.

When we visited from the west coast, Edith and Edwin treated us like royalty and made sure we went to all the best exhibits and performances in the city. The last few years I enjoyed weekly phone conversations with Edith, who invariably had a funny story as well as...

In the spring of 1975 Edith and Edwin Friedman offered me the gift of their city. I came to visit with their daughter, Ann Calandro Friedman. Edith cooked meal after meal for us so we could eat at home and spend our meagre funds at used bookstores and performances at Lincoln Center. She had scrounged discount tickets for us at the ballet, opera, and symphony. She and her husband sent us on the right bus routes so we could see the city above ground. I'm forever grateful to her generous...
