It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Edith Newman.
Born in Berlin in 1923, Edith and her parents fled Germany in the spring of 1938, resettling in New Jersey where she completed high school. After WW2 she met her future husband, Herbert. They married in 1947 and moved to Sonoma County in 1950, becoming chicken farmers near Sebastopol. They were founding members of Congregation Beth Ami, while raising their three children and establishing many lifelong friendships in the Santa Rosa community. Herb and Edith enjoyed 38-years of marriage until his passing in 1985.
Edith died in Santa Rosa on Tuesday, November 18, at the age of 102 ½.
Her Graveside Service will be held Friday, November 21,10:00 a.m. at B'nai Israel Jewish Cemetery (430 Magnolia Avenue, Petaluma).
Edith leaves behind her three children, Carol (Barry), Michael (Lauren), and David (Barbara) and three grandchildren (Harvey, Katie, and Jenny).
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Congregation Beth Ami (Santa Rosa) or the Yom Hoshoah Program of the JCC Sonoma County.

Not sure what to say?

My condolences go to Edith's 3 wonderful children and their families. I am grateful Edith was a close friend as well as a cousin since 1938 when she arrived in Newark,,, N.J. Even though Edith and Herbert moved to California in 1950, we stayed in touch through all the years, visiting back and forth and traveling together. Edith enriched my life, and I hope I was able to bring a measure of happiness to hers. I am a year older than Edith was , and I am happy her transition was peaceful...

Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this time.
