EDITH SOCOLOW Obituary

Socolow, Edith S. (Blumenthal) Edith Sarah Socolow completed her life's journey at her home in Gloucester, Massachusetts on Saturday, March 28. The wife of the late Dr. Arthur A. Socolow, to whom she was married for 64 years, she was the daughter of Carl and Rose Blumenthal. She was predeceased by her brother Jacob. She is survived by three sons: Carl of Camp Hill, PA (wife Holly and daughter Samantha Davenport); Roy of Westford, MA (wife Mindy and sons Ryan and Eli); Jeff of Lynnfield, MA (wife Amy and son Jared). Edith was born in 1921 in Elizabeth, NJ and raised in a family with a rich cultural and intellectual identity. From an early age she was possessed of an enthusiastic and iconoclastic spirit that manifested itself through art and music; in both of which she was highly accomplished. Choosing to pursue her passion for art and painting she studied in New York City where she went on to work in the design and advertising fields. She later earned a Masters in Fine Art from Goddard College at the age of 67. Following her marriage to Arthur in 1949 and their life in Dallas, Boston, Harrisburg and Gloucester she continued with her personal artwork. Throughout the years while raising three sons her dedication to her art never waned. She affected the lives of many during her years of teaching at the Jewish Community Center of Harrisburg and, significantly, her long tenure at Harrisburg Area Community College and then Endicott College. She was always active in her community art organizations including most recently the North Shore Art Association of Cape Ann, MA. Her work has been extensively collected and exhibited. In her later years she continued to paint and draw her inspired seascapes and play her beloved piano. Elemental to her nature was her ongoing free spirit, her love of life, her love and compassion for animals, her deep concern for social justice and her sense of humor. Her and Arthur's membership in cultural organizations and those dedicated to the betterment of the human condition was a testament to their core humanist convictions. Above all, Edith was possessed of an embracing and unequivocal love of family and the many who had the good fortune to be her friend. Her loss to those who love her is keenly felt. But, her influence, her inspiration and her love are her legacy and through them she endures. Services at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin Street, SALEM on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at 11:00 AM. Interment at Beechbrook Cemetery, Gloucester. Memorial observance will be held at her late residence following the interment on Wednesday only. Those wishing to honor her memory can make contributions in her name to organizations of their choosing, supporting both the arts and social justice. Edith was such a wonderful person, artist and teacher. She had a huge impact on my life beginning with classes I took with her at HACC in the early 1970's extending into my own career as an art professor. She was a joy and it was a real privilege to know her and enjoy her friendship. She holds a very special place in my heart as I'm sure she does in the hearts of many of the people she blessed in her long life.

My husband Bob Williams and I were so glad we had a chance to visit with Edith and Art in September 2011. That is the first time I met Edith, Roy, and Jeff--Edith was so gracious and welcoming, and obviously talented and very intelligent. I cherished that visit and also to thank Art for hiring me at the PA Geological Survey in Pittsburgh which has and continues to enrich my life in so many ways.

All our best to Carl, Roy, Jeff and their families. My brother, Bob Markowski, retired teacher (Susquehanna HS) has fond memories of taking fishing trips with them.

Edith was always so gracious and always showed interest in what you were doing. She made you feel comfortable and at ease in her presence. Edith always took the time to ask about you and your family, she was a true lady. I enjoyed being in her company and learned much from her over the 30+ years I knew her. I will miss her holiday cards as they were always a piece of her art. Our deepest sympathies to Carl, Roy, Jeff, and their families. Donna and Jim Snyder

There is a small sign shop called Walnut Bottom Signs that operates from a loving women who in the fall of 1976 changed an 18 year olds life. She opened up the wonderful world of color to us at HACC. She blessed so many of us with her talents and the willingness to share it. She will be missed. Love you, Miss Edie. In Christ

Some 40 years after our parents and grandparents left Europe to head for opposite ends of the globe it was serendipitous for two sides of the family to rediscover each other, How lucky were we to discover Cousin Edith. I will always have warm and happy memories of of our times with Edith in Harrisburg, Melbourne, Hawaii and Gloucester.

I will always remember Edith's exuberant spirit, her joyous sense of humor, and her embracing love of life. She knew just how to make everyone around her feel cherished and valued. I remember how grown up I felt when, at the tender age of 9, Edith solemnly hired me to "babysit" for Jeff by pushing his stroller around the block! Most important, perhaps, were the inspirational life lessons that she taught me and so many other young children-- that the grass in our drawings need not be green, that the sky can sometimes be red or purple or even magenta, and that it is good to sometimes color outside the lines. With love and gratitude for her gifts to so many of us.

Dear Edith,
We mourn the passing of our beloved cousin.
We wish we had not been separated by thousands of kilometers, but know the bonds of family transcended our distance apart.
Lots of happy memories of our times together.
Love to Carl, Roy, Jeff and families.
